down's syndrome child

This is abit of a random one, but my 13 month old has down's syndrome and i'm just wondering whether anyone knows of a child with down's who has curly hair?! My partner and I both have VERY curly hair, but so far DS's is straight as anything. And I've got in my head that children with Down's always have straight hair - can anyone put me straight?

That has got to be the worst question I?ve asked since Sophie was born. The second worst: When Sophie was three months old ? and about to have open heart surgery ? I asked the geneticist whether people with Down syndrome ever have curly hair. (He gave me a dirty look and said no. In any case, I have since noticed some people with DS who DO have curly hair, although it?s true that Ray, Annabelle and I have wavy/curly hair and Sophie?s is the stick-straight stuff I?ve always dreamed of for myself.)

i found this thought this may be of interest

bubblagirl · 20/03/2009 12:54

me personally have only met down syndrome children and adults with straight hair

although there is a lady with curly hair but not sure if its permed or not so possibly i know of one

MannyMoeAndJack · 20/03/2009 12:59

Now you mention it, all the kids/adults with DS who I've known/seen do have straight hair! I've never considered it before but from now on, I'll be covertly looking for curly hair....!

By the way, did you know that it is apparently offensive to write, 'DS child'??!

bubblagirl · 20/03/2009 15:17

i didn't write that i pasted it from ladies blog on internet sorry didn't even notice just copied and pasted it

bubblagirl · 20/03/2009 15:19

ive just apologised and dont think i did paste or write ds child cant even see it written

MannyMoeAndJack · 20/03/2009 15:28

Nah, the title of the post!!!

bubblagirl · 20/03/2009 15:31

oh i see i was worried id pasted it to begin with then read through lol sorry glad i didn't do wrong there

how should a child with down syndrome be addressed as i had no idea it was offensive and my friend has little boy with down syndrome so dont want to offend anybody by mistake

Out of interest, BrownEyedMum, what are your thoughts on this subject?

BrownEyedMum · 24/03/2009 18:29

Firstly I'm very sorry if I've caused offence to anyone by saying ds child. In general I do say 'child with downs' but it's a bit of a mouthful and I tend to think that since my child has downs and I don't mind him being called a ds child, I don't see it as a problem. I don't feel that his down's defines him but it is a VERY large part of his personality and affects everything about him. Children can be called 'special needs children' or 'children with special needs' so why not with Down's?

The comments about poor grammar because it's 'only a person with a disability' are illogical - the poor grammar is because we are all so lazy with how we speak and write, and has absolutely no relation to what the subject matter is.

But just to repeat I am sorry if I've offended anyone.

And for what it's worth, bubblegirl 's post also uses phrase 'down syndrome children and adults' so if I'm gonna get stick for it then I shouldn't be the only one

MannyMoeAndJack · 24/03/2009 18:58

Thanks for giving your viewpoint and no need to apologise (in my book)!

I tend to agree that it's laziness and nothing more - or in the case of a headline, copy space.

theheadgirl · 24/03/2009 20:54

I noticed the "Ds child" in the title and was going to point it out! I know its more long winded but to me its important that its a "child with DS" as the child comes first.

My DD3 has beautiful thick but very straight hair. Funnily enough, I met a child a few years ago who had DS and very curly hair. It seemed unusual to me, so I asked her mum about it - turned out she permed the girls hair!!! WTF, I can't get DD3 to sit still enough long enough to brush it, I couldn't perm hers if I wanted to! Which I don't

BrownEyedMum · 25/03/2009 19:07

OMG! How old was this poor child? I mean, surely perming a child's hair is vanity in the extreme?! On the part of the mother, obviously

misscutandstick · 25/03/2009 19:54

Well ive just trawled thru about 20 pages of yahoo images of children with DS, and theres only ONE child/person with very slightly wavy hair - ALL the rest have distinctive straight hair.

the little girl in question is here

theheadgirl · 25/03/2009 20:33

The girl in question was about 7! Madness, IMO!
Tilly from the picture is a cutie though, I think she is having a bad hair day due to rough weather......

misscutandstick · 25/03/2009 21:54

sorry, yes, my post is misleading. I was talking about the only person with non-straight hair as the 'person in question' little Tilly, rather than a child who's had her hair permed. Sorry for ambiguity.

theheadgirl · 25/03/2009 22:39

S'ok, misscut, I was answering browneyedmum re girls age.
I have been looking at images of people with downs now, following your example. There are some beautiful ones, its a bit addictive! And unless they have afro hair (which must obviously be a dominant gene) they are all straight haired.

BrownEyedMum · 26/03/2009 08:22

Oh Tilly is very very cute Interesting point though about the Down's making her always cold, because my little boy is always warm - how many children have a sweat rash in February?!

My daughter is 2 years old and has downs syndrome and she has curly hair which is definitely not permed (do people really do that to their children). However she is the only child/adult I know that does not have straight hair.

moosemama · 05/07/2012 13:43

Have you seen the These Broken Vases Blog?

There is a post on there about the bloggers daughter Nichole, who has beautiful curls. Interestingly now she's older the curls seem to have softened and her hair is now straighter in general with just a few waves and curls.

2old2beamum · 05/07/2012 14:52

DD3 has curly hair, more ringlets. Mind you she is Afro- Caribbean/Irish what a mixture and has personality to match Great fun Smile
