Thought this was a really interesting article www.medscape.com/viewarticle/584572. Goes someway to possibly explaining abilities to talk in autism and possibly links with speech delay and autism.

can't view it - members only.

Sorry link doesn't work, did copy and paste. Maybe someone else is better than me at links. It's called RSNA 2008:Imaging study may explain language delays in autism

click the top link

odd, it is google-able, but if you try to link it, it redirects you to the login page, but you CAN view it straight from google.

Yes, it's quite possible. Same principle with processing incoming images that are changing too fast. Any form of flickering or fast screen-changes in programmes and I have to look away or feel more and more ill and overloaded, whereas others seem to cope fine. Noisy echoey rooms, same problem. Can't process the info fast enough.

Interesting articles nikos and TC.

nikos · 16/03/2009 20:09

Amber-do you mean you can't process language in noisy, echoey rooms? Interested because ds is currently at pre school in a portacabin and wonder if he struggles at times with the quality of sound in this environment.

Thanks for the link Nikos, I am interested in auditory processing difficulties atm, because my ds has a language delay and a possible "mild asd".

There is so much stuff to read though.

Phoenix4725 · 17/03/2009 06:29

Intresting Tc as I would say ds hears understands better at homme than he does at nursery especially with tv of and just him and me as oposed to 18 other children in same room.

Nikos i agree there seems be close connection between asd and Sli as i see lot of asd traits in my ds who,has GDD,SLI,MLD

TotalChaos · 17/03/2009 07:24

very interesting - but the 64 million dollar question is what we can do about it as parents that is relatively cheap to implement....

sc13 · 17/03/2009 10:13

Totally agree with TotalChaos. Very interesting articles - hope they soon translate into something practical. TinyC's article did mention therapy, but for that to trickle down to us, it may be years and years.
My pet theory of the day is that part of the reason why DS is less 'switched on' at nursery than elsewhere, is because the nursery is very near the overground tube station, and you can hear trains (DS loves trains) all the time. But, short of changing nursery, how can one 'teach' him not to hear them??

nikos · 17/03/2009 10:39

Yes, I do wonder if there is some kind of training we can do to quicken the speed of the speech processing.
Also wonder what the links would be between this and the proven technique of ABA for asd, which is basically just repetitive training to practise things.
