dd4 hs only ever said a word occasionally and bables a bit.recently she has started saying " help help iona"... does this count as comunication?, we dont know anyone called iona, have asked at nursery and there is no iona .who is iona? where did she get iona from?.... she tends to say it spur of the moment and repeats it over and over.then stops and will start again afew hours later?its driving me nuts!....anyone else DC say random things this way?

my ds started speaking like this it was a word but it was something he'd named cant remember now what it was

but it all made sense in the end

thats the thing when its random though as you cant tell what it means it could be something like home or i own at least she has some form of communication coming there

i can understand the driving you nuts but at least she has some new words here could be the start of something

drlove8 · 14/03/2009 09:05

i think im narked because its iona (have noclue where it came from) and not mummy( i have spent years trying to teach her mummy), But as you say, its a small step in the right direction , am very proud ....mabey iona is a doll or something? or one of granny's friends ?

DS2 was very like that when he started to speak. Well done DD4

At the moment he has been saying "where Arwen" on the way to MS nursery over and over again. There is nobody there called Arwen, and the school don't know who it could be.

I feel your pain

perhaps its a cartoon/kids programme that she really enjoyed or was emotionally involved with?

cyberseraphim · 14/03/2009 09:39

Hanen say that you should respond to attempted communication as though it were purposeful (even if you suspect it's not), The Iona bit is a mystery but could you respond as though she was asking for help.

hereidrawtheline · 15/03/2009 08:51

hmm well Iona is a mystery, but WELL DONE!!

TotalChaos · 15/03/2009 08:55

well done to your DD. We had a WTF moment yesteray - I say to Ds - do you know where we are? (we were nearly home). His reply "violent! trees."

hereidrawtheline · 15/03/2009 09:02

oh dear TotalChaos!! LOL

The other day I was smiling really big at DS and he said "What are you doing with your mouth Mama??"

Trust me I swear I smile at him all the bleedin time!!!

5inthebed · 15/03/2009 09:53

Any more words over the weekend DL?

DS2's speaking has come on really well since he started at his SN school in September last year, as his speech therapist is there almost every day and his teachers force him to speak. He goes to a school for autistic children. We get 3-4 word sentences!

So yes, there can be light at the end of the tunnel. Its a slow progress thing, but it will be worth it when you hear them saying "Lub oo"

bullet123 · 15/03/2009 10:50

Those trees can be vicious .
Ds1 insists now on calling me Mrs Mummy Mortimer. I do not know why. DH is now Mr Daddy Bee. Before that we were Tinky Winky and Dipsy and Makka Pakka and Tombliboo Eee respectively.

drlove8 · 15/03/2009 13:47

agree trees are down right scary these days...(execpt tree on cloth thread, she's lovely!..... if someone had told me that SN kids can be so funny a few years back, i'd never have believed it!....dd4 has us ROFLOL sometimes....have proud mummy moment i want to share ... i was recomended a pufferball by another MNer, so got dd4 one she loves it and says BALL when she wants it! defo communication at last

5inthebed and Drlove8:

'where Arwen' = 'where or when' ?

'iona' = 'I want a' 'I own a' ?

??? Just a thought (don't normally post on here but have good friends with a nonverbal DS and I'm quite good at guessing a sentence from its first syllable).

Glad to hear there is some progress.

(Will watch out for trees though.)

drlove8 · 16/03/2009 20:57

oooh could be? i own a ! ,lol@ trees!

sc13 · 17/03/2009 10:20

My vote goes to 'I want a' - that's the first thing I thought, and it'd make sense together with 'help', wouldn't it? Well done to DD!!!

TotalChaos · 17/03/2009 10:34

yesterdays WTF was "Steam! It comes from an AIRSHIP". (Ds saw trails in the sky that probably came from a plane). but where on earth has he heard the word airship????

bullet123 · 17/03/2009 11:07

Maybe something at school Total Chaos?. Ds1 was shouting out "hold onto your ropes!" the other day, which I thought was rather odd until I realised he's referring to a show he's in this Thursday afternoon.
He has to be a dinosaur hunter.
I may blub .

GooseyLoosey · 17/03/2009 11:15

What about that Beach Boys song "Help, help me Rhonda". Really catchy tune, very repetitive and I wonder if "me Rhonda" could be heard as "Iona". Bit of a long shot I know.
