Hi everyone, i posted a few mths ago re: my 12yr old daughter. She has had a DX of DCD, but thats not the best bit !
She has been having assessments querying aspergers, well yesterday we got a draft report from CAMHS... this is the doctors words
In my opinion Laura meets the triad of impairments typical of Autistic Spectrum Disorder

We have an appt next friday to talk about the report and discuss what happens now, im sooo happy that they have taken me seriously after years of fighting the system.

I have a couple of questions if anyone could help me with.

  1. Is she now considered special needs?
  2. Can i get a statement of special educational needs?

Any help welcomed.

Thankyou
a very happy Nicola and DD Laura : )

If she is diagnosed, she is classified as having a disability. This probably means that the school would put her on the special needs register if she's not already on it. However, the getting a statement is different - a diagnosis does not necessarily mean that she would qualify for a Statement. Statements are supposed to be done on basis of need, not diagnosis, though a diagnosis definitely helps to highlight the severity of those needs, if that makes sense.

A Statement is meant for those whose needs could not be met by the school without extra help. This varies from area to area as some schools are given lots of money to pay for SEN themselves without children needing Statements. So in LEA 1, where schools are expected to fund the first 20 hours of any 1:1 support, any child requiring less than that would have a hard time getting a Statement. In LEA 2, where schools are only expected to fund the first 5 hours, a child needing 10 hours would require (and hopefully get) a Statement.

You really need to work out, with the school, how much help she needs and how much help they are providing and can provide. If she needs much more than that, a Statement would be something to try for.

The IPSEA website is really helpful.
