What are they like?

Do they use the original seats or are they those narrower fixed ones?

Applied to Motability grants and this seems to be their recommendation but if it has the very upright fixed seats then ive to get back to them as they arent suitable for ds carseat.

No don't use a WAV, just lots of lifting.. but bumping for you!

pillsthrillsandbellyaches · 16/03/2009 21:27

sorry, no. a basic picasso for us.

are these specialist cars for specialist car seats?

is there not a "car" topic, perhaps that could help?

I have a WAV Volkswagon Transporter - is that any help?

glitteryb6 · 16/03/2009 21:58

ooh dont think theres a car topic?

im looking to get a wheelchair accessible vehicle as ds is getting heavier and im doing my back in lifting his tilt and space wheelchair in and out the boot all the time, i currently have a Citroen C4 Piacsso.

i had a demonstration of a Fiat Doblo but they take out the original seats and put in fixed ones which are narrower and more upright. ds has poor head control and in his car seat in the Doblo his head was just hanging.

While he is still liftable i will continue to transport him in his car seat as it is still the best place for him given his size, but for short trips to the shops etc he will be in his wheelchair.

motability took my details and said that there were cars that would meet my needs for nil deposit so they wouldnt offer me anything towards it, when i told them about the problem with the car seat they revised this to say they would give £3295 towards one of these cars but i would have to phone round to see what seats were in them and if it wasnt suitable to get back to them.

What i need is a drivers seat, 3 passenger seats and a wheelchair space. the passengers seats need to be he original seats so they have a bit of a tilt back in them and i dont want him in the boot as hes only 4.

ideal car would have two back seats with ds inbetween them in his wheelchair, so far i have only saw a Kia Sedona or a Citroen C8 conversion with this configuration.

Any other ideas welcome!

Loggedout, whats the seating config in the VW?

Our dd2 is 6 so getting heavy to lift - and vans are high up so harder to lift into.

We have -
drivers seat plus 2person bench in front (but you can opt to have just 2 seats up front)
2 van seats one in front of other on rhs rear.
HUGE wh/ch space and clamps
Maual ramp
Electric winch
(We have spare seat in case taking extra helper for dd2)

Bench seat and rear seats are van -type fixed ones, but car seat we used to use had tilt back option (sch taxi man has it now)

glitteryb6 · 16/03/2009 22:06

sounds good, can i ask, what conversion company is it from and does it fit in multistorey car parks? Another issue!

oh just read that second thread, ds still needs a tilted seat as well as having his car seat reclined, he has a JCM recaro which is always in the reclined position. my picasso has quite a reclined back seat, you can have it in two positions whereas the Doblos only position was much more upright, the demonstrator chap said that i'd probably only get the recline i needed if it was maybe a bigger MPV with the original seats.

Was from (rummages in paperwork...) Widnes Cars in Cheshire.
Yes it fits in multistories if you duck and breathe in while driving under the gateway (1m90cms)
...but sounds like the carseat thing won't work until he's beyond carseats.

**we found that we abandoned car seats completely once we had a clamp-able wh/ch option. Roll-on roll-off

glitteryb6 · 16/03/2009 22:27

yeah think so to, but he needs such a tilt in the wheelchair that he'd be staring at the roof....maybe i should get one of those dvd players thats fixed to the roof! also we tend to go holidays in the car and it doesnt seem fair to keep him in his wheelchair for 400 odd miles, although i realise once he gets bigger i wont have a choice, altho the car seats supposed to do him up till age 11, that'll be fun trying to lift him in!

We went to France last yr in ours, dd2 was ok as long as we stopped for breaks every couple of hours. Also, took sedative, which helped! Haven't flown anywhere with all 3 for years - too much clobber!

glitteryb6 · 16/03/2009 22:33

I know what you mean! Thats why we drive everywhere, we're off to South Yorks this time! Ooooh, dont know if i'd feel brave enough to drive to France altho i'd love to do the disney thing with ds!
quite like the sedative idea tho!

Another thought - we had a Ford Galaxy before so we could put wh/ch in boot, then dd2 grew and next size of wh/ch wouldn't fit in boot, so we had to fork out again for bigger vehicule.
Moral of story - make sure its big enough for the next 5 years (thats how long you keep a WAV)

glitteryb6 · 17/03/2009 12:05

yeah thats why im trying to make sure we get the right vehicle fir us rather than just what motability thinks is acceptable, really think it'll need to be a Sedona to be honest!

LollipopViolet · 22/03/2009 20:31

We have a W/A Sedona for my uncle, who rides clamped in the back in his big old electric wheelchair. He's fairly reclined too, and has to have a BIG Recaro seat fixed to the base of the chair, and it fits fine Couldn't advise about seats though. We've got 2 front seats, 2 back ones with a gap in the middle for his chair. HTH.
