I applied for my first one middle of Jan, and still not heard anything. Not sure if first timers take longer or not.

staryeyed · 13/03/2009 16:51

I think it can take a while Ive never applied but I heard that they have to get rid of quite a bit of money before the financial year ends otherwise next years funding will be reduced. So as many people as possible should make applications for as many things as possible.

2shoes · 13/03/2009 17:00

I applied about mid feb and got it this week, but I am not a first timer.

2shoes · 13/03/2009 17:01

staryeyed I think that is wrong, I apply every year and have only ever been given money for one thing.

trace2 · 13/03/2009 17:13

am not a first timer either! and only got the one thing, usally a holiday

ive been given money towards two things before, last time i got £880, £500 towards a special needs seat and £380 for a holiday but the chap held the application back till april as he knew they would be getting more funding then so it would have more chance of going thru.
this time it was only one thing, a trike, but i got £1555 so cant complain!

glitteryb6 · 13/03/2009 17:39

that is true about using up the funding tho, i was told that by them a few years back, its because it comes from the government

devientenigma · 13/03/2009 18:50

I'm not a first timer and have been waiting nearly 2 month.

glitteryb6 · 13/03/2009 19:06

Hi everyone, (grin)
i have question about the family fund.
i was given the application form by "team around the child" at my local hospital, but i havent yet used it. Pam (the very nice lady who said i need it) said i should use it as my youngest son is disabled. What i'd like to know is what kind of things do they help you with.? Pam had suggested a short break with both my boys and someone to come along to help with jonathon, so i could spend time with my 8yr old bradley. Thats really all i took in at time of our meeting as my head was spinning with all the info she was giving me. Just looking for a little advice really, as im a single mum, i dont get much time to look on the net and research stuff that i really need to know about.(blush)

family fund will grant for just about anything as long as its not something which should usually be provided by the NHS/SS.

most people use them for holidays, altho they also do driving lessons, computers, trikes, white goods, just about anything really.
first time i got a holiday and a special needs seat for my mums house which was really useful, this time i got a trike.

you can re-apply every year

cherrymonster · 14/03/2009 16:16

i put mine in beg of january, have been told its just been passed to an assessor so i should here within 4 weeks. i have asked for help with a holiday, help to do my garden so ds2 can play outside, and riding lessons as therapy for him.

FlameHairedFreckles · 14/03/2009 16:55

thanks glitteryb6 and cherrymonster, sounds like i should fill the form out and send it off, i need a special needs pushchair for jonathon, but one that lays back, so he can sleep, do you think they would help me with that.??

glitteryb6 · 14/03/2009 17:38

they dont usually grant things that should normally be supplied by the nhs/wheelchair services but maybe if its in addition to something he already has they might?

what i mean is, in our case, they wouldnt normally grant for a special needs seat as thats something the OT should provide but they granted mine as it was his grans house which the nhs wouldn't normally provide for.

what does he use just now?

FlameHairedFreckles · 14/03/2009 18:25

at the moment im still using a three wheeler pushchair, cos they are big, but he is almost out of it, so i need to find a proper pushchair for him. Thing is, he has complex needs, , i mean, global developmental delay, cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus,(has a vp shunt fitted) epilepsy, speech and learning delay by 22 months,(he will be 4 in may),he cant walk very far, not because he doesnt want to but because he cant, cos of the cerebral palsy, and he becomes very tired very quickly.I cant go shopping in town unless he is in the pushchair as he simply couldnt walk around for that amount of time.Do you think i should raise the issue with his physio and my health visitor.? As i have no idea in which direction to ask for help like this.?

glitteryb6 · 14/03/2009 18:37

I'd approach wheelchair services for a special needs buggy and keep the family fund application for a nice holiday!

cant remember who it was that reffered us might have been OT/physio? suprised they havent offerred anything to you before given the circumstances but it might vary from area to area?

glitteryb6 · 14/03/2009 18:41

actually just remembered it was the OT that did the refferal.
we had a thomashilfen jazz easys first then an ormesa bug, now we have a wheelchair

FlameHairedFreckles · 14/03/2009 19:05

thanks glittery, think i will get onto my hv and jono's physio first thing monday morning.

glitteryb6 · 14/03/2009 19:29
