Am a confused mummy right now and just need a bit of clarity really. Amber you sound fantastic and am hoping you can give me some insight.

My little man is 3 yrs 10 mths and hit all his milestones fine apart from speech. He wasn't talking at 2 but is now talking fine. Took him a while to get there but as I say has mostly caught up. However, to me his speech seems to consist quite a bit of remembered or heard phrases and words. He copies alot of stuff off the tv including adverts, reciting cillit bang adverts is a fave but seems odd to me. Uses alot of things he has heard to apply to what he is doing. He can tell me what he wants to and understands most of what we say to him. He struggles with the questions starting how or why.

He finds it very upsetting and frightening going into new places with new people, ie playschool unless I am with him. Took me 6 weeks of full time attendance with him to settle him in without him screaming the place down! However he is now fine and though he always follows me to the door he will happily say goodbye. I am dreading him starting school, he won't take well to that I am sure. He goes hyper when we visit grandparents or people and takes a while to settle down. He used to just throw massive tantrums when smaller going into large shops like B&Q, Tesco, Toys R Us etc but now just acts 'uncomfy' and 'nervous' unless he is familiar with it.

He doesn't really have friends that he plays with so to speak but he is very aware of them. He comes home every day saying X was crying today because Y hit her or X was laughing because he was playing chase with Y. Seems to be quite drawn to that iykwim. He will parallel play fine but hasn't quite got to the cooperative play bit yet. Playschool don't really have any issues with him apart from the friends bit but say he is still growing and will get there. The lady there is a Senco so thats reassuring. We have put him down to be deferred from school until Jan 2010 to give him more time to mature in familiar surroundings. He finds it very hard to sit still and listen to storytime but IMO alot of 3 yr old boys do!!

He seems to be 'impulsive' and this is upsetting as he will just poke or hit someone for no reason and then look mortified. He seems particularly fascinated with faces that he just has to touch or poke.

He is a fab sleeper, eating ok ish for a 3 year old lol, dry day & night.

He transitions ok, likes routine but doesn't have to have it and has no strange habits.

He has gone in today dressed up as Sporticus off Lazytown for comic relief and I can't tell you how excited I was as this is the first time he has EVER dressed up without getting very upset and taking it off seconds later.

I don't know, some days I think he has some issues and others I wonder if maybe I am looking too deeply. The fact that I have found myself here tells me something isn't quite right....ho hum, as I say, just very confused.

Have been to the GP, he has referred him to the hospital for evaluation mainly down to his seperation anxiety and the fact that DS hid behind my leg and chair the whole time we were there and wouldn't talk to the GP whatsoever.

So!! Any thoughts lol! Thanks so much for reading, Debs xx

Debs, not sure. I'm not an Expert, just someone with an ASD who tells others what it's like to be me, so no way can I make any sort of diagnosis or formal Opinion. But I'm glad someone's having a look at him to work out what they think it might be (or not). There's things there that might be part of an ASD or something else, but lots that could be part of a fairly typical lively young man with a mind of his own.

Difficult, isn't it. Especially when they're young. Any idea how long the GP reckons you'll wait for the referral to come through for him?

Thanks Amber, GP said not long but that was about a month ago.....

Hi there, referrals seem to take forever to come through when you're anxious. Hopefully it won't be much longer.

I think you're doing the right thing in getting him assessed, it may be that nothing is diagnosed, as in with my dc, who has some very mild symptoms which could possibly but not definitely be ASD related, and also has the speech delay. Either way, it should get him into the system so he can be observed, and possibly put on Early Action for when he starts school.
