RDI - Treating ASD or AS or PDD... it's got my attention!!

Hi everyone:
On a recent thread I mentioned Relationship Development Intervention also known as RDI. It appears to be the latest thing for treating autism and those on the spectrum in the U.S. and is spreading out to Canada and Australia too - it's only a matter of time before there are certified consultants in the UK. Sort of like where ABA was a few years ago.

Describing it simply RDI is a parent based treatment method. RDI is more about understanding the autism spectrum and what the difficulties are for people affected focussing on incorporating certain activities into your lifestyle to motivate your child to want to interact and by interacting they are learning. Many of these activities seem to be as you go about your daily business. There also appears to be ?floor? activities. It appears to be all about fun and relating and enjoying your child and having the child enjoy you and learn the value of communication and relationships. Appears to be used for people on the wide range of the spectrum from nonverbal young children through to teenagers and adults who have difficulties in relating to others due to aspergers.

They have a chat board which I have lurked on for awhile now and there are a lot of parents saying it is working for them in a way nothing else ever did ? we feel like it is something we have to take a better look at. Some of these parents have been using ABA and continue to use ABA in conjunction with RDI. They even have on-line chats with the founders Dr. Steve Gutstein and his colleague Dr. Rachelle Sheely.

There are parent seminars and workshops which are now only in the U.S and Australia I think unfortunately ? but it?s only a matter time before they are here in the UK. I am acquainted with a SENCO here in the UK (unfortunately not the SENCO at my dd?s school) who went to the professionals seminars in the U.S. and came back raving about RDI saying how a lot of what they said just made so much sense. It really looks like Dr. Gutstein has done his homework.

From the looks of it the family use the treatment methods themselves within the home and their general life and those who are fully using it regularly check in with consultants for guidance either by going to meetings or communicating via email or phone if they are long distance. Downside is that it can cost a bit of money to get started (i.e. attending seminars/workshops etc especially if they are not local to you). Long term being able to treat our daughter ourselves will make it easier being international and not having to hunt down therapists every time we move. We are going to start with the DVD ?Going to the Heart of Autism? and the books ?RDI Social and Emotional Activities for Children, Teenagers and Adults??. Will let you know when I get it and what I think.

I really recommend having a look at the RDI website rdiconnect.com - I spend hours on there hunting down the chats, testimonials and children?s stories to see real life account of what people think. You can also get signed up to receive their regular newsletters by email.

Near the bottom of the main page there a link to the ?DVD Release Notes? which gives you an idea of what the program is about. It will explain it better than I could. Like I say I have found it interesting and we are taking a look at it.

I know this has turned out to be quite long but we are a group who share and being so new many may not have heard about RDI. It may not be suitable for everyone but IMO definitely worth a look and deciding for yourselves.

How exciting, RnB!! Our mutual friend, the lovely S (not supervisor S,other S!), lent me the book. Of course, had no proper time to look at it but couldnt' find the bit that was relevant to DD!All seemed too 'advanced'? Need to get it and look again...

I went to a seminar with Tony Attwood today and asked about this approach. He said buy the books but that he did not find the course of value - I can't write what he actually said but hope you can read between the lines ...

Wow MotherEve I am very envious I have immersed myself in Tony Attwood books! I am very reassured by his comments on RDI, I am attempting it with my dd and have 3 books, but due to practicalities and finance have put on hold the course unless the full package is fully available in the Uk. Did he say anything else of interest today?

Too much to put in here! - 200+ powerpoint slides - looking at HFA/AS and strategies for support in puberty/adolescence.

I sat there thinking - this man knows my child even though he's never met him - it was 9:30-4:30 - looked at cognition, physiological changes - things like - make sure you tell them about puberty before anyone else does - what they hear first will stick with them - example - a boy who kept speaking in a high squeaky voice - he was worried as he was told his voice was breaking and he was trying to protect it

How to manage the emotions, bullying, self image. Definitely worth going - he's in Cork, Edinburgh and Newcastle over the next couple of weeks see here for details

Best quote of the day: "a cat is an autistic dog"

Shame the school SENCo and senior LSA left before the last session ....

I just received in the mail the "Going to the Heart of Autism" DVD and 2 of the books so we're going to go for it as soon as I have some time to watch the DVD and figure out the approach to take.

Must say I was extremely when it arrived in the mail yesterday - I feel like this is another new beginning and we are moving in the right direction. I certainly don't think it will hurt and we might even have some fun.

Hi RnB:
I think PACE is in Oregon - looks like they have everything on site.

I think we are going to work with the DVD and the book activities for awhile and try to get to a parents course (perhaps in Florida in the next year or so). With all this transferring to South Africa (and I KNOW they don't have RDI there yet) we are just going to have to do the best we can for now but definitely want to incorporate this lifestyle for us. DD2 is already doing so well (considering where she has come from) and we are just trying to use more declarative language.

Can't wait to see how you feel about the parents course. I am just buzzing for you and sooooooo .

Hi IG so glad you have got the RDI stuff through, wishing you lots of success with it, we have so much hope and optimism in this intervention it just seems "so right" IYKWIM. Please keep us updated (would really love to see you again before your jet off to sunnier horizons) we didn't really get chance to talk RDI.

RnB when are you going? (sorry I have forgotten AGAIN) (still having a bad time with dd etc etc) Project pace sounds very interesting! (We are off to Tunisia for 2 weeks on Wednesday, would love to catch up before we go??xxx)

Monica2 - I know what you mean about it 'seeming' so right. Looks like Dr. Gutstein really has done his homework.

We hope to come back to Brighton for a family visit before we depart - family loved it so much but wished the weather was just a little better. Will let you Brighton folks know when we might make it down - probably in about 3 or 4 weeks. Maybe we could have a mini-meet RDI/ABA style. Eh JakB, RnB??

June 18th or July 2nd or 3rd. My vote is for July 2nd or 3rd so we can get the RDI report from RnB and by then the movers will have been in and home will be boring so I think the family will enjoy a trip to Brighton. Then it will only be a week till we fly!! What do you think about July 2nd or 3rd?
