In process of statement for ASD DS who will be 4 in April. We are at the stage where all the professionals that work with DS have had to get their reports in. The advisory teacher wrote a rather crap report and I emailed her and told her what I thought. She has now offered to retract the report but Im not sure what effect it will have. Any advice?

When you say a "rather crap report" what do you mean? Also, what is her role with your DS? Sorry to fire questions at you, but not sure whether to advise you to ask her to retract the report based on what you've posted. Could she not add extra information to her report to make it less crap?

Sorry should have explained better. Autism pre school project like portage- she trains and overseas the workers. Report is vv long and mostly irrelevant. She makes vague statements and then contradicts them and in no way emphasises the amount of help that DS will need at school- non verbal, v limited understanding, difficulties learning new skills, limited imitation skills etc. Instead she has made suggestions about visual timetables etc. She has offered to amend the report to make it better but I don't know how she will amend it. It has already gone in so I dont know if it would even make a difference.

How many other professionals have submitted reports? SALT? OT? PRE-school teacher?

If there are enough good reports with the right info, then I don't think one crap one will make much difference.

If not, though, I'd ask her to add extra information detailing things like :

  • What his attention span is
  • How he interacts with the other children
  • What things he finds difficult in pre school
  • What sort of support he has received in pre school
  • What sort of support she recommends that he should receive in reception

I presume she's new to this role, and doesn't normally send in crap reports to LEA SEN teams!!!

The community paed who assessed my child as part of the Statementing process (Medcal Advice - Appendix C) submitted a crap report that I strongly disagreed with. I contacted her, pointed out the errors and she retracted her original report and submitted a replacement - so it can be done.

I always challenge any reports written about my child that are inaccurate or unhelpful.

There are reports from: OT, SALT, ED psych, Pead and preschool teacher the only 3 I have seen- pead was good, SALT and ed pysch described my son very well but made vague recommendations. I haven't seen the others so I have no idea if they are god or not. Not new to the role I don't believe she works in DS's interests. That's why Im worried about asking her to retract it- incase she makes it worse.

In this report she has listed a lot of things he is capable of instead of the things he is not. Some of them are inaccurate and misleading which I pointed out to her as well. She has said things like -"should have access to..." and "opportunities to...." and then gone on to say only if the school thinks its necessary and has the resources to implement it. No idea of quantity or quality of support.
