has anyone else asked for a second opions on their DC , as I do wonder if they missed with my ds we have diagnoises of gd mld and Sli, reading below would you think its worth me asking them to look again
ds almost 4 has sense of humour but vry slapstick
imaginative play well long as its cas or trains will push them around happily o sounds though

eye contact only with adults that he knows well or his siblings not other children
hes non verbal
sociable will play with his sisters but not other children , is more often than not on his own at preschool and seems to prefer it that way will walk of if another child trys join in what hes doing

he does have problems with loud noises puts hands over ears

he does like things done set ways ie we take his sister to school we have to go to tescos

was slow to point ie 2-1/2 had teach him hand over hand

if were in new places will prefr his buggy or loud places ie tescos he has g in trolley or will scream hates busy places

was slow to walk still has issues now pysically wise with gross .fine moto control

he ticks most boxes on the triad

but been told hes not on the asd spectrum as he will concertrate on things this was in a 15 min drs session then 30 mins group/team meeting this was with me sat on floor redirectin his attention to the pencils/puzzles

id second opinion it to be honest my ds will concentrate in what interests him and can sit for very long time ds assessment took 1hr and series of tasks were set for him and lots of questioning from me reports from pre school etc and was dx with HFA

i would ask again for a refferral my friends son has serious ASD traits and was told he doesn't tick any boxes at all and you couldn't meet a child with so many traits

so yes keep on at them if your not happy i dont think 15 mins is long enough at all to make a dx

I would say yes - experts can miss things- but I wonder if there is mileage in waiting a short while. Our sons autism was missed at 4 (although I was always suspiscious) and I think his general delay (also MLD) combined with his hyperactivity made it harder for the experts to assess.

Why do they think he has GDD ? I am still not sure what this dx means other than overall delays in development. Was the slow walking slow enough to suggest a delay in that area (although now resolved) ? I don't understand the point about concentration. Many ASD children over concentrate.

he was very slow to walk even now at 4 he still can not walk for long ,kick a ball or run he has hypermoblity and hyprtonia on top of,

They told me GDD means hes delayed in more than one area , hes about 2 years behind for everything except for speech which is nothing his recptive laungage is around 18 month level.

Theres never been ayn reason or looking into why he has GDD.

Hes not hyperactive hmm bar fact sleeping is issue but even then will play/watch thomasand he is very passive

I think there are many cross overs in behaviours in children with ASD and GDD. They are both diagnosed on the basis of how the child presents intitally. If your DS had physical delays/hyptonia then this would have been picked up before the age at which ASD children are dxd. Do you think his communication issues would get more help with an ASD dx ?

Phoenix4725 · 10/03/2009 11:37

the delays i noticed from 6 months old took me 18 more to convince anyone else,Think more would give me accces to the courses run as lot are only available to those with ASD dx though they would apply to my son

Atm were lucky we finally got good salt and were workingon alternative communication , hes starting to sign now.

yes he was 2 1/2 when was dx with GDD, when lot of the traits he now presents were not noticable or just put down t his immaturity

Who was it that dismissed so many symptoms? are we talking: paed, GP, dev paed, HV, or someone else? is it a possibility to bypass this person and get referred to someone else?

Everyone is entitled to a 2nd opinion if you have reasonable suspicion that the dx you've been given is incorrect.

My DS was not dx'd aspergers until his mid-teens. as a young child he was mis-dx by school doctor (emotional behaviourial disorder) Ed Pysch also failed to spot Aspergers, Comm Paed thought it was Tourettes, Consulatnt Pysch mis-dx'd him with severe mental illness (what a prat!). I then demanded a 2nd opinion and he was finally correctly dx as having Aspergers.

If you have any suspcion that your child has not been correctly dx'd then demand a 2nd opinion from a Consulttant Psychiatrist / Clinical Psychologist who specialises in ASDs. Things have mobved on from the 'dark ages' when my son was a child and ASDs were virtually unheard of however your average Community Paeds is a generalist and does not have the specialist skills to make difficult differential diagnoses - you need a specialist.
