Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Right, that's it. I can't cope with anymore

dd1 will only drink one thing - pear & pineapple juice, preferably form a small lunchbox carton, with a straw.

Just before Christmas, it was withdrawn. I panicked wildly calmly looked around, found a few places promising delivery, and got on with getting dd1 to drink from a beaker again (last time we messed around with her drinking, she stopped. For 9 months )

Her juice was available in 1 litre cartons, and we worked hard at getting her to drink it form a beaker. She came through ok, and drinks well now.

I have just been to re-stock the cupboard, and her juice has been withdrawn.

Cannot find it anywhere for love nor money.

I do not want to be doing this anymore.

I cannot even begin to contemplate how I go about getting dd1 to drink anything other than her beloved juice.

I have, if we're lucky, a week's supply, and then that's it, no more fluids for dd1.

I just want to curl up and weep. This is not fair (and I am aware hwo childish that sounds, but it just isn't fair).

lancelottie - we were in the middle of that process, working towards water

she is on a 50/50 juice water mix now (which has only come about since the small cartons were removed, so good things can come of change ), and will eke out our remaining supplies by watering down furhter. there is the trust issue though, so can't change it too fast

madmouse - been there we washed out her small cartons for a while, in the hope it was a temporary blip in supply. It works, but only for a limited time, as the cartons get a bit manky. So we can do this for the next couple of weeks (we are on our last carton - wish we'd had a bit of notice, as then would have saved a few more)

Arabica - that would be wonderful, if you could check, thankyou

Whereabouts are you if I do find some?

silverfrog · 05/03/2009 12:31

I am in Epsom, Surrey.

Have just looked up Fresh & Wild - if they do have it in stock, I can feel a day trip coming on to buy up all they have

I will drop in to Wholefoods Mkt just before school pick up and if they have any left I'll get them--won't be able to get back on line til tonight though.

silverfrog · 05/03/2009 12:38

thanks, Arabica

silverfrog so sorry what a PITA. If the place Arabica is thinking of has it, it might be worth a phone call to explain your situation and ask them to put all their stock on hold for you, and order any more they can? And then if you get more of the proper juice could you mix that with your own homemade mixture so you gradually wean DD on to that?

Arabica · 05/03/2009 15:26

Sorry Silverfrog. One lone carton of tomato juice left--everything else sold and they aren't getting more. You could try other branches though. I am literally out the door, but google Wholefoodmarket (or freshandwild)

silverfrog · 05/03/2009 16:21

Thanks, Arabica. I might ring around a bit later, but it would be a case of postponing the inevitable, i fear

I think I am resigned to trying to help her through this - the plan is to go cold turkey with water.

I'd rather not, but it looks as thoguh I have little choice, and since cold turkey it is, one way or another, it makes sense to not get into this predicament again.

At least water is available everywhere we are likely to take dd1 to

The only thing with water is that different people's water tastes different. Will this be a problem for your DD? I only live 0.75 mile away from my parents, but the water tastes sooo different.

silverfrog · 05/03/2009 18:54

I know, but it is the least bad option, iyswim.

If it was up to me, I'd have left her drinking her juice.

But that is no longer an option, and so we can either go through hell and get her dependent on another juice (and it would have to be a minority juice, as she cannot tolerate citrus or apple - that's why we ended up with pear & pineapple in the first place!) which could lead us to the same situation again...

or go for water, which is at least widely available (albeit with taste differences)

It is a difficult one. Not as if drinking is an optional extra. I hope the cold turkey is as painless as possible for you.

silverfrog · 05/03/2009 21:44

we have a few days - dh & I will be desperately brainstorming over the weekend...

last time she went loopy over drinking, she stopped for 9 months. At that point I was still having to spoon feed her, so we got a fair amount of liquid into her by way of purees, etc, but there is no way she will tolerate that now...

tbh, god knows where we go from here, but we have to face it.

I may be able to help you with the pear juice as it was all DS2 would/could drink for a while (allergic to many fruits). James White do bottles of organic pear juice mail order. here.

silverfrog · 05/03/2009 21:56

thanks, sphil.

our ex-local farm shop used ot sell that, and we have tried it before.

dd1 refused it then, but that was when she was insisting on drinking out of the small cartons

I have some on order to mix with the pineapple in the hope that that will work, but I am not holding my breath.

sphil · 05/03/2009 21:57

I find it quite sweet and not very pear-y - don't know if that's good or bad for DD1!

Sassor · 05/03/2009 21:58

While you have some left, dilute it a tiny bit more every time with water or a substitute drink. Water's healthier.

madmouse · 05/03/2009 22:01

a water filter [brita] will go some way toward making water taste the same.

silverfrog · 05/03/2009 22:03

sweet is probably good, her current mix is quite sweet, not at all like what you'd expect form a pineapple mix.

how did you move your ds on? I remember last year we chatted about packing for holidays, as I was stressing about gettinng dd1's drinks through security for the plane, and you mentioned oyur ds was similarly wedded to his juice.

and what does he drink now? dd1 is fairly sensitive to fruits, so citrus and apple bases are out.

OP posts:
silverfrog · 05/03/2009 22:05

we already filter water, and she's not been impressed in the past

I could lay bets now on it being a scorching hot spring/summer - it always is when dd1 is on drinking strike

Sorry for delay - haven't been on MN for few days. The only thing he now drinks in addition to pear juice (and rice milk, which he's always drunk) is plain water. He can't have citrus or apple either. I can't remember how it started - but it was definitely on some occasion when only water was available - a hospital visit perhaps? We had increased the water:juice ratio a LOT before that though, because of tooth decay so it probably tasted pretty weak anyway. The only reason I still give him juice is because he won't take his supplements in water - and I don't blame him!

However, he's never had a problem with drinking - so I can really understand why you don't want to withhold the juice.
