My GP is useless !

I went to the GP this morning to tell him that I think DS1 has aspergers.I suppose that I spent too much time talking about his obsessions with zebras, socks and computers and also his fixating behaviour it was hard to explain DS1'S ways in two minutes.

The GP then said its not a pead referral I need but a psych one.
So he took a copy of the EP report and said he would ask around as too which people to refer DS to.
Then because I said aspergers syndrome he replied it's not a syndrome and he couldn't even spell it when he typed it into his computer.
I came away wondering why I bothered I think he thought I was plucking words out of thin air.

Will a psych referral be useful to us or do I need to go back to the GP and explain myself better ? He was adamant though that a paed referral was the wrong way to go and I didn't want to say I'd had advice off the internet regarding a developmental pead cos when you mention the internet people just roll their eyes and brush it off.

Asperger syndrome is what it's called! I do wonder how much training these docs have in anything like this.

It is a developmental paediatrician that you need to see, as far as I know. Can the National Autistic Society help with this, I wonder? If you ring their helpline and ask them directly, then tell him what they said or ask him to do the same, that might give him a clue about the correct way to approach this?

frazzle

Would agree with amber's response.

Would only add that I would now seriously consider registering with another GP practice as this lot sound like a waste of space. This GP couldn't even spell Aspergers Syndrome?.

'Tis true Attila. He spelt it aspergus!
Also it's not a syndrome according to him.

Could be worse. Could be Asparagus syndrome (nice with a bit of butter), or AssBurgers (best with Tomato sauce).

I have heard ass burgers so often.

Agree with Amber and Atilla - definately get a new GP and find one who can find his arse in a snow storm. There are a few...

Here it is the psychiatrists at CAMHS who dx autism so psych referral sounds right to me.

When i took DS5 to the GP's, a young one too, one you might think had a bit more up-to-date training. I had explained DS5's problems and was asking for some special milk for him (casein and soy free). When she noticed him 'looking out his left ear' (its a special trick he can do, helps him see round corners i think ) i explained again (very patiently) that he had autism. Then she denied me the milk and asked me why he was licking the carpet.... I too wondered why on earth I had even bothered taking him.

Your local Primary Care Trust have a register of GP's qualifications and special interests. See if they can find one with experience and knowledge in CAMHS.

What's his speech like? If he has language development issues it might be worth getting a speech therapy assessment. Speech Therapists see this all the time and are generally not arrogant knobheads like GPs. A Speech Therapist could then make a specialist referral directly.
