RE-the statement: my son who is in reception is being assessed for ASD and Dyspraxia and he has aqn IEP because his teacher thinks he needs extra help that she can't help him with Outside agencies also visit the school for him. Sould I wait until he has a diagnosis or apply now or wait for the school to say he needs more help other than IEP help? His main difficulties from the schools view seem to be with his writing skills, communication and concentration.

You have a litle more power if you request the stat assessment yourself as you have a right to appeal if they refuse to assess initially (whereas the school wouldn't). Maybe get some advice from NAS? Not having a diagnosis shouldn't make any difference, as they should be looking at his needs, not his label or lack of one, iyswim.

You can apply for a Statement on his behalf even if there is no firm diagnosis as yet.

You need to write to the Chief Education Officer at your LEA (your council will tell you his/her name) and give them six weeks to reply (note that date on your calendar).

If they say no you can appeal the decision.

IPSEA are very good and they have model letters on their website you can use:-

www.ipsea.org.uk. They also have a helpline but it gets very busy.

Good luck!!.
