T-shirts and badges with 'I have Autism' etc wrote on them?

I used to think it was a bad idea to put your child in a t-shirt labeling them as 'autistic' but i am finding it really hard when out with dd2, i hate people when stair at us when dd is flapping or crying, sometimes i feel like telling people 'she has Autism'but i just don't know how .

I was thinking, if she was wearing a badge saying she has ASD people might stop stairing as much or come up and talk to us.

What do you think? bad idea or good idea?

I think it's a good idea from the point of view of not having to explain, but needs balancing with the problem of giving dd a label in her head which defines her totally.

I too hate the staring and have occasionally said 'he has autism/ he is autistic/ he has special needs', but now just tend to ignore the people unless we're in a shop and it's to a shop assistant, or on a train and it's to a ticket inspector, iyswim. I don't just explain to random starers.

there are a lot of ignorant people out there who think your child is just naughty, there has been plenty of times whilst out in the supermarkets i have heard whispers to one another "ohh he's a naughty boy" i have grown a thick skin now and i dont let it bother me, i just look at them and shake my head and think you the one with the problem for not educating your self with problems children/adults face now a days. I feel they dont deserve an explanation due to their ignorance. I only tell people about my son who i spend time with and got to know and trust.
i personally don't like the badges or t shirts

bubblagirl · 19/02/2009 17:32

i dont have anything against them at all its just a shame that we feel we need to have to use things like this to stop ignorant pople airing there views about our dc

very tempted to buy my ds a badge or t shirt as im sick of the comments made so far i have manage dto not buy anything but as his sleeping is worse so is his behavior and really feel i need to protect him from sad people with nothing better to do than comment on him

bubblagirl · 19/02/2009 17:34

bubblagirl- i have just bought 2 of the badges off of e-bay, i don't think i like the t-shirt idea but a small badge is more suttle.

i have seen a couple i quite like:

"Autism University National Stimming Team" (in a circular stamp type design)
and
"If you stare long enough you might cure my Autism and then we'll work on your social skills"
or
"STOP ME, im an escapee! I have autism and should not be on my own" then theres a space for mobile details. - but not too sure, it might give not-so-scrupulous-evil-types the option to be horrid.
or the blunt:
"Im not ignoring you, I have autism"
"Please be patient with me, I have autism"

never actually bought any of the accroutremants though (cards, badges, t-shirts etc)

bubblagirl · 19/02/2009 18:22

i just bought the 3 badges for 5 pound im not just gorgeous im autistic, im autistic its rude to stare and im not naughty im autistic

i dont like the fact i have to but im sick of the comments my ds looks much older than he is so gets alot of weird looks from his speech to being in his pushchair and for having a dummy whehn i cant find anythin g else to calm him

also he has to take his little games console sometimes into town it helps hi,m cope with whats around him by fovcusing on the game and the comments you can imagine what we get for that

at least now the longer they stare they will see the badge and hopefully keep there comments to to themselves
