Hi Drlove8, Alfie is also a hummer, he seems to do this when he is nervous, mind you I sing when I go to the dentist, ps the yoghurt is working brilliantly with the movicol.

alfiemama thats magic about the movicol, glad the wee mans on the mend!what yoguart are you putting it in? , . humming is driving me nuts! its all the time , and not particuarly tuneful...more like droning TBH! lol.have noticed it does get a bit mor high pitched when dd4 need changing or is hungry/thirsty. could this be her way of comunicting? does alfie walk about with small toys in his hands too?. dd4 has just got to have small toys (today its a mcdonalds freebee and a hairbobble),she doesnt play with them just sort of shakes them and hums some more! lol

Oh yes ours at the moment are the kideregg toys, he keeps them under his pillow at night, he has also developed an obsession for the egg.

I put the movicol in what we call the tennis ball yoghurt, its the muller corner with choc balls, only yoghurt he will eat as beige and has nice little balls,

jasdox · 19/02/2009 12:52

our ds does when he finds things to stressful, like the last party he went to, or shopping if to busy - and yes v. droning.
used to hum whilst eating but seems to have stopped that one!

drlove8 · 19/02/2009 13:48

alfiemama lol at the "tennis ball yoghurt!",thanks to all who posted- it seems this isnt unusual at all then, bu just another one of the "quirks"

Football pasta
Bono Pie (shep pie) he likes u2, wont eat this though gags on it
Chilly willy
Sizzling sausages
Berty burger
Mummys curry (suprising this one, as its home made curry) never in my wildest dreams would I think he would have this, its a ww recipe.
Larry Lasagne (again not on your nelly)

Reading a good book someone on here recommeded cant eat wont eat, amazing how many others eat the same as Alfie, one little one ate, all beige and then masala curry!!!

drlove8 · 19/02/2009 14:09

lol love the food names- made me smile! its hard when they wont eat - i tried everything with dd4, her thing of the moment is sandwiches cut into circles with biscuit cutters , last week it was triangles! lol praying she doesnt start on fancy shapes, like stars , can never get them identical- she'd pick up and refuse straight away! lol

Yes, I have a hummer. She has sung/hummed a lot since she was tiny and seems to find it soothing.

I have to say that the humming drives my DH slightly bonkers sometimes. I barely notice it.

drlove8 · 19/02/2009 14:12

well , its my b'day soon and im hopng for those earphones that are wireless ,so i can listen to corrie or eastenders for once! lol. humming does seem to ge louder at cerain times of the day, or if we have visitors! lol

Yep, my dd hums too. It's usually when she's 'running' -which involves running back and forth and hand flapping -or when she is stressed.

alfiemama · 19/02/2009 14:21

Interested to know if its asd or as children, or a mixture?

siblingrivalry · 19/02/2009 14:24

My dd is still going through ASD dx, but we have been told that AS is more likely in her case.

alfiemama · 19/02/2009 14:26

Ah mine is asd, we did think AS but has just had verbal dx with asd

siblingrivalry · 19/02/2009 14:37

Does your ds hum sort of 'tunelessly' too?! I wish I could describe it better -I'm sure you will know what I mean though.

alfiemama · 19/02/2009 14:49

Yes like trance like really.

FlorenceAndtheWashingMachine · 19/02/2009 14:50

Mine has a dx of PDD-NOS. She has always had a lovely voice and used to wake us up singing in the mornings, which was lovely.

Now she is nine and seems to take refuge in singing or humming when she is in a noisy situation and needs to calm herself.

Deeeja · 19/02/2009 15:26

My 6 year old with asd humms, nearly all day, and mostly tunelessly, just a constant droning humm. It is whenever he is walking, eating, sitting, watching tv, doing anything at all, or doing nothing.
My 3.11 year old 'sings' first thing in the morning, and at night, and at odd times during the day. He has autism.

Marne · 19/02/2009 15:30

Dd2 (3) humms, today she hummed as we were shopping, she has always hummed whilst eating too, when she was 6 months old my mum used to give her food to show people how she hummed (we didn't realise them that she had ASD), i just hope she grows out of it before she hits her teens.

drlove8 · 19/02/2009 15:43

alfiemama my dd4 has developmental delays,-suspected autism, no clear dx as of yet, still waiting to be seen by the autism spectrum team., do you you think its worth bringing this up a next peadi appointment?

OP posts:
drlove8 · 19/02/2009 15:46

lol @ the repeating "you" -(seems dd 's gets the repitition from me !

Isnt it weird how the do things different in different parts of the country, think this is why its so blumming confusing to us.
I went in with a full and very thorough list, I put it on here for Amber to look at actually, the paed said she was very impressed and said I had saved her valuable time.
I would deffinitely mention everything to them, as they cant possibly see everything that they need to in the assesments, your little one sounds like Alf, he has been given verbal asd dx.
How long have you been waiting, ours has to go to the panel, is that the same DRlove8?

cherrymonster · 19/02/2009 20:57

yes connor hums, and now that he has discovered a new abiltiy, he whistles too. most irritating i have to say. especially when accompanied by hand flapping, finger snapping or jumping around like a fool.

CaptainPlump · 19/02/2009 21:32

DS hums! I thought he was unique but I've recently noticed that a few other autistic boys of my acquaintance do it too. He does it especially intensely when he's happily stimming, and I find it adorable.

magso · 19/02/2009 21:40

Oh ds hums - well its a rhythmic tuneless dirge really, and can be very loud and annoying. Its usually when he is playing with his men - a bit like atmospheric film music! He also whistles equally tunelessly through his (gappy) teeth! He has picked up some of his school mates various but distinctive vocal stims, and I wonder what it must be like at school - a whole orchestra perhaps!
