Little things get you down

Are you like that? Today the physio said it was unlikely ds2 would ever be able to stand on one foot to do something like wash his feet, as he will be unlikely to have the balance and strength, if he ever gets standing independently. I found that utterly depressing. It's only a small thing, so I don't know whay it has affected me like it has.

Right there with you on the little things lou, ds (?asd)went for glo. stim. therapy yesterday and was sat in a special needs chair with straps/restraints not that they were used just the waist strap like in his highchair but it was like a slap in the face to me. Last time i went in to watch he was just using a little chair and table with half moon cut out so he couldnt escape he must have been too fidgity.

Has this morning seen you a little more 'up' Lou ?

lou33 · 14/04/2005 13:44

Oh thanks so much for asking! Yes I do feel a bit better. Ds2 went to nursery today, and dh was at the gym, so I had a couple of hours doing nothing constructive, which was nice. Got the OT coming round with remap to bring some massive steps for him that have been made, so he can get in and out of his bathseat. No idea where they will go because the bathroom is tiny! But ds2 is looking forard to crawling up them

I'm sure you'll find the room. Great news about those steps hon, a little more independence for R

lou33 · 14/04/2005 14:03

NdeP they take up the entire bathroom floor!

can you shove them in the airing cupboard or something ?

lou33 · 14/04/2005 14:12

hmmmm, about 6ft x 3ft x 4ft, dont think so

Bloody hell, he's only a dinky 4 year old ! Still, needs must, I suppose. Surely whoever made the steps could have fashioned some sort of collapsable design ?!

hub2dee · 14/04/2005 14:28

The couple of hours sounds like useless bliss. The best sort.

Hope you did nothing but paint toenails and navel gaze.

Blimey, those steps are a bit large Lou.

Maybe use one of those Land Rover wrenches, but screwed to your bathroom wall, and dangle the steps outside the window so when you need them you just throw it into 'retract' and stand clear ?

Doesn't it just make you want to tear your hair out when they assess your child.. in their (your!) house.. and then delivery some BIG F OFF piece of equipment.. to add to the all the other big f off pieces of equipment that you are already all falling over.. and expect you to be thrilled?!!

Our bathroom is like a cupboard. Fortunately DS's bath step is a singular one (like a small flattish box).. but also in the bathroom are DH's bath seat and high loo seat (for during bad arthritis flare ups). There's hardly room to sit on the loo to do your business! (Especially with MY fat arse!!)

I know we wouldn't be without special-people for the world.. but sometimes, do you ever stop to imagine a living space without all this bloody 'equipment'!! Other people's houses look so (delightfully!) bare!

((hugs)) Lou... glad you are feeling a bit better.

Ah, Lou Brought a tear to my eye. It's always hard, I think, when professionals utter 'final' statements. The 'unlikely' phrase is just devastating. I remember when our speech therapist said it was 'unlikely', if DD gets any speech at all, that she would ever be able to get beyond labelling . Although I kind of knew that, I cried for a day, solidly.

lou33 · 14/04/2005 19:38

these are collapsible, but they take a lot of putting back together. They were made specially for ds, to enable him to get in and out of his bath chair, then all we have to do is strap him in and lower the seat. They look great but our bathroom is overtaken by stairs!
