Any ideas on how to transport non-walking 3 year old and a newborn - and please don't say a sling!

dd has CP and can walk about 100 metres with a kaye walker but is mainly in a pushchair. As she's coming up to 3 I was going to ask for a referral to wheelchair services and see what they have to offer. However, I am now expecting a new one!(am 10 weeks so still a long time to go but have to start thinking about these things) Great news and we're chuffed to bits but now panicking about how to transport the two of them. dd is getting bigger and lots of double buggies don't seem to offer the support and seating she needs. I do use a sling and am happy to sometimes but would not like it to be my only option as I have a bad back (side-effect of having disabled kids, ho-hum .) I have looked at the dreaded phil and teds and I don't think the seat is deep enough to stop her from slumping to one side. In actual fact she doesn't need masses of support but depth of seat and proper height foot plates are really important. I know wheelchair services are utterly uninterested as they only provide a solution for the disabled child and not the family. I need something lightweight as I'm already doing loads of lifting in and out the car etc - I'm asking the impossible aren't I?

I have a joovy caboose in Sunderland (north East)if anyone is interested. I'm about to trade it in for a phil and ted double as although I have a 3year old and 9 month old, my eldest can get tired on long walks. The front seat on the joovy does recline but is recommended from 6 months as it is far from flat. Won't lie to you, it is quite heavy to push though but I guess any pushchair with 2 children would be. Only really selling as following the removal of my gaulbladder it seems to hurt my tum when pushing.

If anyone wants a swap for a phil and ted or would like to make me an offer, feel free. E-mail [email protected] Thanks, Lyndsey

HBOB, Congratulations on your news,i was interested in this post because i have a severley disabled daughter who is 11 years old and a 15 month old toddler. I have 5 children altogether and my 11 year old is my eldest. When she was still small enough i used to get away with a variety of double pushchairs with her. She has ofcourse been far to big since my last 2 children were born for this option to be viable and i have found unless i have another person with me i am pretty much housebound until my toddler gets a fair bit older.I did for a short time have a buggy board that i fitted to my daughters wheelchair (i was told i wasn't allowed but i had to get my toddler to nursery and i don't drive so i got on and did it without telling them). I have pretty much found that when i've asked proffessionals for help or advice with this problem that i have just had a 'well it's your own fault for having more children' attitude thrown at me. My daughter loves having her siblings though and they love her. I am still yet to find a solution to getting out with a buggy and a wheelchair other than taking another person with me. There must be so many people in this situation though,i really hope in the future wheelchair services will be able to come up with something suitable. I've found the odd thing privately but they cost a lot more than i have. I did find a clip device that would clip a wheelchair to a buggy but my daughters wheelchair is quite wide and with a buggy clipped to the side of it too we'd never fit on any pavements.
Anyway i hope that you find something suitable, best wishes, Jo x

It is v pricey, but there is a baby carrier designed to link onto a wheelchair from BIME

They do design things and get them into production if there is a need, so it might be worth contacting them

whereabouts in uk are you

I have a used double maclaren buggy as mentioned down the thread which I no longer use - bought for EXACTLY the same situation you are in

was a few years back now though and want to get rid

it is very wide, GOD it is wide, and you can't use it with the baby till it is 6 months (I used a sling till then) but if you could use it and we could work out how to transport it...

badbadbadparent · 02/09/2009 21:45
