Any advice on what to expect with hydrocephalus?

Hi. I am new to this and just want to friendly support! I have just moved to a new area and have a son (nearly 4) with hydrocephalus after having group B strep meningitis as a babe. He is just showing signs of some learning difficulties and I am still struggling to potty train him. I love him to bits but he is driving me a bit mad by being immovably obstinate about EVERYTHING, and I am trying to come to terms with the fact that he is going to struggle at school and probably in life in general and I have no friends around! Help!

Hi I would contact your health visitor and see what she says, it is important for assesments to be done at this stage ready in time for school. This should hep asses what and how severe any delay is. Also the ASBAH website is good. Write ASBAH in google.

geek · 10/02/2009 19:42

Thank you for your messages. I have contacted ASBAH and they have given me some good support. He has had development assessments too and most recently thay said he is closer to age 3 than 4 in most things, but within normal ranges at present. I will talk to my HV, esp re potty training which is a disaster area even after a year of trying.

Just popping in to say welcome Geek! Do not know much about hydrocephalus, but ds ( now 9) has lots of delays ( after a difficult start to life) and potty training was a long struggle so can sympathise ( we got there in the end).

Hello and welcome, Geek! My DD doesn't have hydrocephalus, although she does have excess brain fluid, so I was told about shunts--but she doesn't need one.

BriocheDoree · 11/02/2009 06:55

Hello Geek, my DD also quite different (dev. delay / speech & lang disorder) but wanted to say Hi. Can also share your pain at the potty training (nearly there now after about 18 months trying )

geek · 11/02/2009 16:20

What worked for you re potty training? We have sticker charts and choc rewards (to be honest he could have anything he wanted if he just pooed in the toilet!), and I have just started taking favourite toys away when he poos in his pants as the more postive approach has not worked so far. He knows its coming as creeps off and hides! I try to stay calm but he makes everything worse by sayng 'I love pooing in my pants and making you sad mummy'! Wees are not sorted either but I can cope with those a bit better. Any advice???

Just wanted to sympathise with the poo probs. My DS will be four in June he has an ASD, he's two thirds potty trained but will only poo in the potty when he's naked from the waist down - if he has pants then that's where it goes. Or at least that's where it starts and then he generally thinks the better of it, tries to transfer the poo to a potty and ends up with it in his hair (because it was "yuk" on his hands). Oh yeah! I'll watch this thread to see what suggestions come up because I'm afraid I've run out of ideas.

Just wanted to say well done to BriocheDoree on the potty training. You must be so happy you are finally there! I meant to say that before but am a bit caught up in my own little world at the mo!!

Hi In exactly same position with daughter nearly 4 and suffers from hydro, showing signs of learning difficulties too, potty training a nightmare. So will share any suggestions. I’m currently reading on ‘Shine’ charity website to see if they have any advice.
