ds1 is 2.5 and nonverbal he was assessed and placed on waiting list for speak therapy 4 months ago. Since then he has started pointing and showing he understands some words. What I need help with is trying to get him to say the words he does not copy so I am totally stuck with what to do any ideas please!!!

Hi Hungryhippo, can't help I'm afraid, because DD always pronounced well, but bumping for you. BTW that's already fantastic if he's pointing and showing understanding

That is brilliant! But the wait for speech therapy advise must be hard.
There are lots of knowledgeable people about much more likely to help so really only bumping. I dont know if this is current practice but when ds was preverbal we were told just to repeat the word. If child looks at an object(ie show interest in wanting it) ie milk touch the object and say milk? Ds want milk?
It is easier to teach a child to copy an action before a word - eg clapping, because you can do that (hands over hands)for them innitially.

just racking my brains for the stuff I learnt on the Hanen course - the course was geared towards language delay rather than ASD, so apologies if these ideas don't turn out useful:-

emphasize key words

  • pause before the key word
-prolong the key word -whisper or shout the key word -point at the object connected with the key word.

as magso says - repeat, repeat and ..repeat some more!

-Imitate your child's sounds and actions, and add something new
-Interpret - say it as he would if he could
-Show the objects you are talking about to the child
-Name people and things in which he shows interest
-be consistent - use the same words for the same routines (bathing/dressing etc).
-Talk in simple sentences.

great advice tc. create opportunities for your child to communicate, eg:- blow bubbles once only, wait for child to reqest more by body movements, vocalizing, or looking. repeat the word bubbles +++++ same with action ryhmes, sing a bit, wait, see how he asks for more. model words in routines.
offer choices, you want ball or car? you want bubbles or balloon? show items as well as naming in choices.
hassle slt dept. sometimes we have to crisis manage, and those parents taht shout loudest get.

thanks ladies, alot of that i'm doing already but it does help to be reminded. Managed to get through to slt dept, his slt is on holiday back mon so will be hassling her then. Dont know if it is typical of asd or just typical of ds1 he doesnt like choices i guess he thinks you show me both why cant i have them. One of the things he seems to have most trouble with is if i say where is ds1 hair he will point to his hair then if i say where is mummys eye he will point to his eye, its like he only hears eye. The only time he copies movements is at his bed time story but he seems to be clumsy at it e.g. if i showing my fingers running he copies but it just looks as if he is trying to click his fingers. Any ideas??
