they will look at more subtle social/conversational skills and use of language, sometimes kids with aspergers may speak well, have good vocabulary but have more subtle problems - e.g. if you say It's raining cats and dogs, get confused as it's water not cats and dogs etc. If you google semantic/pragmatic problems you'll get a feel for the sort of higher level language problems a kid can have.

ds was assessed by a salt as part of the team with cahms and also by a salt sent in by the LEA when the school applied for funding just before he moved up to secondary school
The lea salt spent the morning with him...observing him in lessons and then took him out of lessons to do some exercises with him.
She did some interesting work using pictures of faces and asked him to read some pictures. He was quite apalling at both.

social skills can be a major issue with these children - distance, interrupting, talking too much, changing the subject, those more subtle sorts of things.

SALT advice is invaluable. They can suggest things to do and offer social skills groups.

Yes dd1 saw the SALT as part of her assesment, dd really enjoyed it as she found the tasks easy but fun. She had to point to things in a book (eg, 'point to the blue cow and then the yellow fish') and then she made a picnic with plastic food.

Ds has High Functioning Autism. He has great speech and a great vocabulary but he struggles with communicating that he feels unwell or sad or that something bad might have happened to him such as bullying at school. When these things happen he tends to have massive meltdowns after which I question him until I hit on the thing that was bothering him. He doesn't seem to link that if he tells someone something could be done and it won't get as far as the meltdown. We got a referral to SALT because they can also help with communication difficulties like that as well as the physical speech element.
