AAAHHH!!!!! DD's school place NOT GUARANTEED ANYMORE!!!!

Bloody LEA. Our Assessment manager has said VERBALLY that dd will have a place in the unit at our fab local SLD/PMLD school (Pixel's ds goes there). Now, they are saying that the panel will meet at the end of May "and they will let me know the outcome". AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Stresserama. The school is very good but dd NEEDS THE UNIT [STRESS FACE]

Oh JakB, that's just not fair . Is there any chance the panel is a formality and the manager has inside info that she's going to be offered a place?

It HAS to go to panel, its unavoidable. Just hope its a formality. Is there any way you can find out more about any problems? It doesn't sound likely that there would be any, unlike asking for funding for home prog which you could say you are considering to get them agreeing to the school, think about it as a possibility, maybe if you have to appeal. Do they have a parent liaison person? Can you ask them what is going on and what their thinking is. Could be a simple rubber stamp but always has to go to panel.

Oh JakB, when I saw the title of this thread I really hoped it wasn't you. Ds had to go to the panel as well before we got the final decision but they do take your preferences into account. It's just that they have to get the details of all the children wanting special school places and decide which ones need them most. I would have thought that if they felt my ds was a good candidate then your dd will be too. Fingers crossed eh?

Yeah, I kind of knew it had to go to Panel but it's just that the assessment manager keeps saying that dd will get a place at the school but NOT GUARANTEED in the unit. That's what's stressing me out. I have heard through the grapevine (one of the parent governers) that there are 3 places and that 3 children (not dd) have already secured them (although how, I don't know, if the ASD panel hasn't met yet). Still, they're going to want me off their backs and certainly they won't want me dipping into their pockets for ABA anymore when she's school age so hopefully...

hopefully it is just a formality xx If they have given you the nod, there is usually nothing to worry about, however it is stressful!

My poor friend has just been turned down for the special school of their choice and she is in a real panic

Oh, your poor friend, Fio. It's a nightmare when you find the absolute place for your child because then only that place will do! What's she going to do? Will she appeal?
I thought I had been given the 'nod' but now realise that I think the assessment manager (who is very laid-back) shouldn't have given us such a 'definite' answer. He's backtracking now...

fingers crossed jakb. when ds1 went to panel for his sld/pmld schhol, everyone was very cagey although they kind of hinted that he would get a place. i know how stressful it is- when't the panel? ask someone specifically to phone you afterwards- our statementing officer did- we had to wait ages for the letter.

Yes, we got a phone call straight away which was a relief.

It sounds to me as though the assessment manager has a pretty good idea of who will get in or she wouldn't have said anything to you. She's probably just panicking a bit on the off-chance that she's wrong and will get into trouble!

JakB, my firend has been told to look round another special school (my dd's which IMO is better than the one she had chosen for her dd, LOL) not guarenteed a place there though. they have also suggested she looks at a couple of mainstream schools, which in all honesty has made her blood run cold

and the thing that makes me so angry is my friends little girl has a limited life expectancy. She has been refused physio because the physio said "there was no point" as her dd didnt like it. And now she is having to fight for apporpriate schooling. I just find it all so cruel

Oh Fio In our speech therapy booklet that we get sent while a child is on the waiting list it says pretty much the same thing. A child who has a degenerative condition or is unlikely to make much improvement is considered low need.

Jakb I know how you feel. My ds had already been in his sen placement a year before we went to panel to get the placement named on his statement. We were so stressed as we knew it was the right place for him.

Try parent partnership if you have one. See if you can find out if any firm offers of places have gone out yet. Hopefully she will get a place and it is a formality.

Fio that is terrible! What so because she has limited life expectancy she isn't entitled to any quality of life?

I'm almost in tears that a little life could just be written off like that just because some bloody little jumped up number cruncher in a sterile office somewhere thinks that children like that don't matter.
