What can you tell me about cranial oesteopathy?

Particularly for use with children with ASD. I think I've found someone fairly local who has some experience. What have been other peoples experience of using this and any improvements noticed.

Probably not able to help much, but I have a friend who swears by CO. She has had it done and says it really helps although it was for different reasons.

Have used it on baby for slerep and worked well, the lady is employed by a SNU and she says it helps the kids immensely.

TBH as long as the child with asd is OK with the touch component then at the very elast it would be usefully relaxing I think.

hotpotmama · 31/01/2009 09:55

Have used it on my 3 babies, 2 for colic and 1 because he'd been very poorly and in hospital and I knew it made such a difference to my other 2 that I wanted him to have it to aid his recovery.

It cured the colic and I was amazed. Think it should be available on the NHS, but a lot of the doctors I came across are cynics and rolled their eyes when I told them I was going to try cranial osteopathy.

Go for it, just make sure it is someone that has a lot of experience with children and ASD if thats what you want it for.

Hope it helps!

we have had 2 sessions so far and have seen v slight improvement in temper - coincidence or because of it we cant be sure - but will continue. child (AS) not unhappy to go (which is also v positive) if yo uhave the money give it a go.

Really worked on my chap. Go for it. Might as well - its not going to do any harm.

Did this for my ds aged 6 (ADHD) - it was amazing. Calmed down and was more focussed - which was great for school. We go for 'top up' treatments every 3 months. I swear by it.

eNABlemetobebetter · 31/01/2009 17:33

My son had it and it worked wonders but he hasn't got SN.

My DD also really enjoyed CO, she certainly calmed down a little and her coordination seemed to also improve slightly, but above all she found it really relaxing and would lay almost still for almost an hour!! and would sleep really well for 3/4 nights after (worth the 35 quid for the sleep!! IMO)

mumgoingcrazy · 31/01/2009 19:38

DD1 (NT) had it for colic and mild glue ear and it sorted her out. I was told DD2 (sn) was completely deaf and was scheduled for hearing aids. After some CO she now hears perfectly, she had severe glue ear and it cleared it. She was a classic case for grommits.

DD2 still has cranial every couple of months for her SPD. It's difficult to know what exactly has done the trick but her sensory issues are so much better than they were before we started. We currently go to one who specialises in SN and says the majority of his patients are ASD. I still don't fully understand it but all I know is it has been amazing for my girls.

That's really encouraging. I suppose it is worth a try. Is there a way to know if someone is a good osteopath?

If you are anywhere near Leeds, the Good Health centre on Roundhay Road is brilliant.

We had some sessions in the summer with DS for his epilepsy. We were doing so much with him including homeopathy, diet, new meds, that we were never sure what was actually working. But we are thinking of giving it another go to see if it has any impact on his dreadful concentration at school.

Hotpotmama -that's where we went too! Think that the woman we saw is on maternity leave but she was good!

Used cranial for DD when she was tiny (glue ear, reflux, feeding problems) but to be honest I don't think it really made any difference. Friend with HFA child said it was v helpful for him though.
At the London clinic, all patients were treated in one big room with lots of couches but they have a private room which you can request if your child would be be more comfortable in it.
The practitioners were absolutely lovely and the treatment they gave ME after she was born was fabulous!!
We went to the osteopathic centre for children, based in London and Manchester: www.fpo.org.uk

Whereabouts are you. Know a fantastic one (and good looking too!) near East Grinstead.
