i have just been reading through the red flag autism checklist from the NAS website. it occured to me that ds2 ticks most of the items on the list, as well as ticking all but two of the items on the dyspraxia checklist. i already have a definite dx of dyspraxia but am now wondering if he has ASD as well. do i need to get him checked out again?

Worth a try, I'd say. Asperger syndrome often has a lot of dyspraxia in it, and vice versa, so often a diagnosis of one can lead to a suspicion/diagnosis of the other. How are his social skills - how does he cope with parties, groups, sudden changes of rules or routines etc?

awful! and his eye contact is abismal too- he will look at you and the second you start to speak his eyes wander off. he hates change, and throws the most awful meltdowns all the time.

Hi Cherrymonster, I am reading a book at the mo, from NAS lending library, will get the name for you. But it states in their that nearly all co morbids, ie Aspergers, Autistic spectrum, Tourettes etc, all seem to have a link to dyspraxia, the statistics are quite shocking.

I will go and have a look now.

Definitely worth someone having another think about him, I'd say.

i hadnt thought about AS. i'm pretty sure he doesnt have tourettes though- think i might have noticed by now. i do definitly think there is something other than just dyspraxia though.

Mt DS3 was dx with dyspraxia when he was 8; he was finally dx with Asperger's as well when he was 18! It is a common co-morbid and I would definitely ask for your DS to be re-assessed.

How strange you should post this, as I was wondering the same about ds2. He was given a dx of autism in Feb last year, but I think he may have dyspraxia as well. How do I go about getting a dx for this as well, or do you think he would have already been dx with this already?

cherrymonster · 30/01/2009 19:41

it was done through school- the senco put him on school action plus, i asked the hospital if he could see a consultant, they dx'd and referred him to OT and its all gone from there. he had help in school last year but doesnt now, he does have the OT go in to school once a week though

ds was dx with aspergers first and then got the dyspraxia dx after. There is ofton overlap of these two conditions it seems

Hassled · 30/01/2009 21:09

Someone on MN ages ago explained it to me as being like the Olympic circles - i.e. overlapping. Yes, there are often AS tendencies in Dyspraxics - my DS2 has a DX of Dyspraxia "with Aspergic tendencies". And in most respects you would never realise - just pops up with poor social skills, obsessions etc.

5inthebed, I'd ask the same people that were involved with the ASD diagnosis if possible.

When I was being dx for Asperger syndrome, the psychologist did the checklist for dyspraxia and said I met its criteria as far as they could tell, but I didn't want to go for the full formal dx of it as I already know I'm bad at balancing etc and can't catch a ball and have really bad fine motor skills etc, but I already know how to get round most of these things. And I'm not about to want to go into a sports team at my age so it doesn't bother me to have a piece of paper with that on it. But it might make a bigger difference to a child and to the way they're treated in a school.
