Teachmetotalk.com has a new DVD "Teach me to listen and Obey" for receptive speech delay

I've been on the site. The teacher's accent and mannerisms do take getting used to but...

I must admit that 3 hours' worth focussed purely on the receptive side does sound great.

Has anyone ever had any of the other DVDs from this lady and would you recommend them? I'm thinking I might order this as I'm going to the States soon so could watch it while I'm at my FILs.

Nope, only looked at the free extracts on the site, am impressed with the site and the extraccts in general though. So afraid you'll have to report back on whether it's any good. As an aside - is it me, or does the title sound like a dog obedience video LOL. Seriously - I wonder what the content with regard to "obey" will be- whether it engages with behavioural issues at all.

I've ordered it - having it sent to my FIL's house in New Jersey as I suspect I might not be able to play it here.

I think it only really goes up to pre-school age but will definitely report back.

Just an update. Both DVDs do work in the UK.

The behavioural stuff is basically aimed at convincing parents not to try to use inappropriate discipline techniques for the developmental stage in question. For instance, she says Time Out is no good before the 24 month developmental stage and queries whether it is useful before the 36 month stage. She focusses on distraction/diversion. Fair enough.

The first DVD is aimed at convincing parents that a child needs to learn to "attend and listen" before s/he can obey. If anyone is in the early stages of dealing with a child with possible receptive language problems and wants to see this, let me know. You basically "see" the therapist modelling language in good was and helping kids learn to play cooperatively with her. This could be particularly useful for someone who's on a waiting list for speech therapy.

The second DVD was more useful for DS2's stage and I've got two pages of notes from it. It goes through issue by issue (eg two-step instructions, adjectives, etc). Few things surprised me but I picked up some tips. I'd recommend this to anyone who's mastered basic "Hanen"-style techniques but needs a bit more detail on helping a child understand - and who is willing to commit to getting their child to have special "play on the floor" times with them.....

If anyone wants more info, let me know.

PS did you notice I managed to stay off mumsnet for two weeks? whohoo! Oh and DS2 did his first poo in the toilet but it seems to have been a one-off.

Do you want to borrow it total? If so contact me via the speech forum (if you can remember who I am on there - I have completely forgotten who everyone on there is apart from Kettlechip and Tclanger!)
