DS2 also loves sitting on benches . Didn't want to hijack other thread, but yet another example of the fact that DS2 and your DD are, in fact, clones

Oh, my DD also loves sitting on benches. Actually I frequently spot likenesses between Silverfrog's DD and mine...

silverfrog · 22/01/2009 12:30

honestly, a quick trip to the shopping centre, armed with a box of raisins, and she sits there beautifully snacking away.

she also loves commenting on all the people going past, which is fine as only simple stuff "baby in a buggy", "man with blue shoes" etc. Then dd2 joins in - her latest pearl of wisdom? "that man wearing pants, mummy?" . Am now beginning to realise just how easy dd1 was as a baby

it is bizarre how similar they are, though. We should get them together one day.

BriocheDoree - welcome to our clones club

BriocheDoree · 22/01/2009 12:35

Ooh, yes, DD does that as well - the commenting, I mean!

sphil · 22/01/2009 23:30

Well no commenting here - there would be a mother UNDER the bench if that happened . DS2's liking for benches is entirely due to their connection with picnics/snacks - he often runs ahead on a walk and plonks himself onto a bench with an expectant look.

Are you OK atm Silver? Just read another thread where you sound as if you might be having a bit of a time of it.

well, you won't believe this, but that is exactly the sort of thing dd1 does as well, sphil

the expectant look from huge pleading eyes is almost enough to make me crumble...

we're doing ok, thanks. we've just had the most awful month, tbh, but i think we're coming out the other side of it.

to be fair to dd1, we have just moved house, she's changed schools, Christmas in the middle of all that (with week long stay from my step children, which always freaks her out as she can't get a handle on when they come/go)... quite a lot for her to get to grips with.

she has been a shocker though, and we have had some tough moments.

But her language has definitely taken a huge leap forward - she has generalised loads, and is also brilliant at recognising sounds out of context now.

So today, i picked her up from school. we walked to the road, she was running ahead a little, and she heard an aeroplane.

dd1: an aeroplane in the sky
me(dragging a reluctant dd2 along): hmm? oh yes, I can hear an aeroplane
dd1(scanning sky): it's not an aeroplane, it's a helicopter (it was). a helicopter flying in the sky. the sun is out (a little optimistic here, given the rain ), clouds in the sky.

I then asked her to show me the helicopter, and she all but pointed to it (another exciting new skill for her)

so maybe the screaming has been worth it

she has also become the dependable big sister when we are out and about. if we go to the M&S cafe for lunch, I used to dread how she would behave. But actually it's dd2 who is more trouble (just normal NT 2 year old stuff). dd1 sits beautifully, eats crisps - new food! - and waits nicely for her food to arrive. dd2 is up and down all over the place .

sphil · 23/01/2009 10:23

Oh that sounds like a real mixture of fantastic and awful! I'm sure all the changes must be affecting her - but I've also read that developmental spurts can trigger behaviour difficulties, so maybe the progress in language is causing some of it?
Her speech does sound great though - and her ability to scan (DS2 finds this very hard) and indicate to you what she's looking at. That's real shared attention isn't it, which is so positive.

We should definitely do a cafe meet up - DS2 loves them too and is well behaved. Always is if food is in the equation . He has so many snacks and treats when we're out - I worry a bit about his weight in the future, as neither Dh or I are exactly skinny.
And he's put on quite a bit since he broke his leg.

I'm sure that it's developmental surges causing this (althoguh obviously amount of changes not good - we have, of course, lost the toddler group we used to go to, her favourite shopping centre, playgounds she knew, etc)

Her commenting is just fantastic now - she came up to me a couple of minutes ago and said "mummy cutting fingernails" (I was) and "dd2 is pushing her trolley". Swiflty followed by "Mr Tumble after Our Planet" she has turned inot such a TV addict

She really has coped with such a lot over the last couple of months, as we've been toilet training too.

And, worst thing ever - real - the only juice she drinks has been discontinued. That caused me several sleepless nights, i can tell you

BUT, I can still get the same juice, but in large cartons (she only drank it out of lunchbox sized cartons) and she has taken to drinking it from a toddler cup no problem She even now drinks some rice milk in the mornings

So, for a girl who loves control, there's been alot out of her control recently

A cafe meet-up sounds good, will have to arrange it when I'm next over that way (my brother lives in Bristol so we come across country fairly regularly) - although i fear dd1 would show me up. she is rapidly learning the art of being a monkey form her younger sister

SixSpot · 23/01/2009 10:48

Ah ha!

DS3 also a big fan of sitting on benches, although no commentary from him either.

SixSpot · 23/01/2009 10:50

silverfrog, fantastic about her language!

silverfrog · 23/01/2009 11:14

{grin] Sixspot - what is it about benches?

sphil · 23/01/2009 12:21

Oh don't worry about the showing up. DS2 had to be removed from DS1's sharing assembly yesterday as his high pitched shrieks were drowning out the teeny tiny voices of the narrators . In his defence, it's the steroids (m'lud).
