I am so pleased, ds1 has been awarded higher rate mobility and middle rate personal care. I really did expect jsut to get refused and i would urge anyone puting it off to get the forms in.

I sat and cried when I read the letter. It's a bit of a shock that he is considered that disabled, and the money means he can do some of the things that will really help him that we jsut couldnt afford.

Quick question though, what now? We currently get workign tax credit and a little housing benefit. DO I need to inform them?

You need to inform tax creds, as you'll get more from them as well. Tell them you;ve been recieving DLA from the date it was backdated, and you'll get the tax credits back dated as well.
Not sure on housing benefit.

I recognise the mixed feelings....got the same decision for myself a few years ago. Sending a mixed bag of hugs and high fives!

its worth looking into cavity wall insulation and loft insulation as these are free if there is someone in the house getting DLA....really has brought our bills down

Me too! I was awarded DLA for DD just over a year ago, lower rate mobillty, medium rate personal care. I remember feeling a terrible pang of guilt as I do not consider DD disabled, I just have to watch her like a hawk when we are out anywhere. And like you Chops, I never thought I would get anything, just filled in the forms on the advice of SenCo.

Oh, forgot to say, that after being awarded DLA, my Child tax Credit automatically increased. Had no idea DLA affected Tax Credits, it was only when I questioned the increased payment that they informed me it was because I got DLA for DD!!

I have to watch him like a hawk, and it causes him pain and he falls over all the time.
I happened to mention the dla idea to his paediatrician and she really backed me up, which I think is what really helped. I just can't think of him as disabled, even though when I sat down and filled in that hateful form that is what it all adds up to.

We don't own our own house, but looking at all the different things that we might be entitled to. It's a bit of a minefield though, really hard working out what we should get and how the different payments going to affect each other.

I've called the tax credits to notify them, but wasn't told anything about extra payments, will have to wait and see.

you will get extra money from tax credits- have recently been awarded DLA for ds2 and my tax credits have gone up by £70 a week.

sadnog · 19/01/2009 12:54

Yes, you will definately get an increase, mine didn't go up all that much but I think you get more if on higher rate mobility.

Does anyone know how long it takes to get the excemption certificate? Just happens that my road tax expires the end of this month!
