I had another one of my own personal GAAAAAHHHH moments today. I was talking about ds2's language difficulties to someone who, IMO at least, should really have known better.

Me: He has disordered language development which means that he can say a lot but doesn't understand as much.

Person: But his language sounds fine to me.

Me: Yes, his spoken language is good, but he finds it hard to understand when people speak to him. He's been having speech & language therapy since he was 2.

Person: Oh. But his language sounds fine to me.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!

How many different ways can I explain it????

So that I don't sound feel like a whingey old harridan, please feel free to join in with your GAAAAAAAAHHHHH moments.

I am cooking separate meals for DS1 and DS2, as I do most nights.

MIL: Can DS2 eat lamb
Me: He can - I mean he's not allergic to it, but he won't eat meat that's not minced
MIL: Just a very small chop maybe
Me: It would look and feel so different from what he's used to.
MIL: Some lamb is very tender.
Me: GAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!

Next night - conversation is repeated, but this time about avocado.

The thing is, it pushes all my guilt buttons about how I really should be trying to widen DS2's food choices and makes me think she feels as if I'm the one making him fussy.

I get that a lot with dd1 as well. She can say anything at all (and does), but her understanding, and indeed appropriate use of language is way behind

this week's GAAAAAAHHHH moment for us has been around drinking (and sadly not wine!)

dd1 has real issues with drinking. she stopped drinking totally for 9 months+ a couple ofyears ago.

we have worked very hard at getting her to drink again. she now drinks a pear/pineapple juice, from small lunchbox cartons only.

the company is now discontinuing these (GAAAHH! no.1) - I only found this out as I tried to re-order, so had no stockpile left.

we panicked calmly worked on her drinking the same juice out of a toddler cup (she had been working up to taking tiny sips of dd2's water, so vaguely familiar with the cup). she has halved the amount she drinks, but is slowly coming around, as long as we hold the cup for her

On monday I picked her up from school (ASD special school, she only started there just before Christmas, so is still finding her feet. Plus she has a new class teacher to get used to)and was told she hadn't drunk much. I asked if they were holding the cup for her, and was told that they thought it best she learns to do this herself. I hadn't thought of that

Yesterday i picked her up to be told she hadn't drunk much. I asked why, and was told they had put her juice into a normal cup for her to drink

today, she has refused to drink (but not with her)

why did they have to mess her about? I really don't know what they thought they would gain fromit. why rush an ASD child who has already had a change forced on them?

so I join you in your GAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!

DD1 is very tactile defensive.

Family member: dd1, are you going to give me a big hug like dd2 did?

DD1 looks at me for help

ME: How about a Hi 5? DD1 likes to do those?

Family member: Ok . . .
And grabs dd1 in a bear hug after the Hi 5

GAAAAAAAAAHHHH!
