Hi, dd2 is using pecs at nursery and at home, we have found it a godsend, she has speech delay and possible ASD, she picked up pec's within a few weeks.

I havn't been on a course but i worked along side her nursey leader whilst they taught dd pec's.

We started off with making her a book with photo's which included;

Me
Dh
Dd1
The Dog
Bed
Bath
Car
Home and Nursery

We used them to explain situations (where we were going, what we were doing etc..)

Then we added photos of her favorite foods etc so she could point to what she wanted. (we did this at home)

At nursery we worked on her handing over a picture/photo for a choice of food/drink, she is now using pec's symbol cards to choose food, drink, toys and activities.

the do2learn site has lots of useful free symbols to print off (www.do2learn.com). the australian pyramid site for PECs has a detailed guide of all the stages you should go through to get PECs going. Will try and dig out the link for you when I have more time. Pyramid is an organisation that runs courses in how to use pecs (www.pyramid.org.uk) I think.

I have used PECs, but not in quite the same way as you or Marne - as I was using it to get (already verbal DS) to build up his words into sentences.

If you want to use it as your main method of communication I think the pyramid 2 day workshop (the one busybeingmum mentions) is essential really, unless you already have loads of behavioural training. They're very well run.

They also sell a DVD which gives the basics, shows the phases, can be useful to watch. Sometimes local SN or portage libraries have a copy.

ah - know the feeling! I've been on quite a few pyramid courses and they are always very professional etc so definitely worth the hassle.
