Took ds 4.5 to the dentist today, she is very concerned about the wear on his teeth through teeth grinding and has referred him to the community dentist. He is happy for her to look in his mouth, but she cant touch him, to touch him or get a closer look, he will have to put to sleep. He suffers with sensory modulation disorder and grinds them in his sleep.

Any other teeth grinders out there with suggestions on how to stop this?

My Ds grinds. When he starts we offer him a chewy tube which helps but he doesn't always want it. Apparently crunchy snacks are supposed to help and massage around the jaw.

You can get a guard made up, but sounds like he would have to go under to get the moulds made. Also, sounds like he may resist having this in his mouth. Sorry not a lot of help.

Do you think its a sensory seeking thing or stress related? Could he still be seeking sensations even in his sleep? or could it be that he has had a lot of stress during the day?

What do you think?

Ds chews his sheet- expensive on sheets but I can see it might take some of the wear from his teeth! Does the dentist know why people grind their teeth - I do and am not ASD.

The dentist didnt comment as to why she thought he grinded his teeth. She is aware that he suffers with a disorder, perhaps she thought it was disorder orientated and didnt like to guess.

Why do people grind their teeth?
