SALT self referral,ds7?

hi there.i was wondering if anyone could advise me about a SALT assessment for my ds,7.
he had very good early speech development altho he had a stammer, but over the last couple of years i don't find his speech so clear.Altho his early communication skills were excellent, and described as so in his school report, now i feel there is a problem but can't put my finger on if it is just pronunciation or more than that.
I vaguely remember the school nurse saying anyone can self refer for a speech assessment and wondered if any of you have done that.
I have started to repeat speech back to him and correct f to th etc and am not so much concerned about therapy ,more to see what is causing this.
Altho there is def problem with pronunciation, ifeel also he is not picking up some things we say,and hisorder of words is not always right.also he often can't find words. This is complicated by the fact he learns welsh at school but english at home, and in addition I question if it could just be slang talk from the tv,or friends at schooletc.
Any thoughts or advice gratefully received.

I self-referred via the GP. You might as well - they'll do an assessment and you don't lose anything by getting it checked out.

if you're concerned no harm getting it checked out - if there's no problem, then they can just discharge him after seeing him the once. I would phone up local SALT department and see if you could self-refer, or if you need GP or school to do it. might even be worth getting his hearing checked out.

his hearing is down with colds but when he had full hearing test on day with no cold, his hearing was good.
will ring number school nurse gave me a couple of years ago, just didn't want to waste an assessment if it is combination of colds, learning welsh[they are totally immersed in it in school day]and habit of speaking in a casual way either for fun or from telly.
Have decided to cut back telly to cbbc only, ask my dh to speak clear english to him,ask my ds to speak in normal, not fun talk, and ring for appt.
don't know if lack of clarity of his speech is due to blocked nose as he has asthma and rhinitis and is worse with colds.
any further thoughts/comments appreciated.
