Right ladies if anyone is still reading thread. I have now drafted a copy of the info i plan to give to the teacher, SENCO etc. I would really appreciate your comments good or bad!

I have started with an introduction, as i want to avoid rubbing anyone up the wrong way if poss.

Introduction

I had never heard of Sensory Modulation Disorder before now. Looking for information I found it all very technical and hard to understand and even conflicting at times. I initially found it hard to distinguish between normal behaviour and disorder behaviour. I have learnt that some of Ds's behaviour is not chosen by him, but merely a response to the message being sent by his brain.

I am not suggesting that Jacob be treated differently or pandered to, the purpose of this booklet is to pass on information and my experience of Jacob and hope you find it helpful.

(I always have a good book on the Disorder ?The out-of-sync child, if anyone would like to borrow it)

I then go on to explain briefly what modulation disorder is, ds's behaviour, ds's diet.

What do you think? is this necessary? worded correctly etc, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Looks like just the trick claw - and given your initial problems is IMO very necessary!!, just keep things as brief as possible and to the point.

Would it be worth breaking it down and giving a few details of the sort of things he's might find difficult, by area:

ie. Classroom: Ds finds painting or any other messy play extremely challenging. At his nursery they found that doing xxxxxxx was successful

Toilets: The noise of other children flushing the toilet is difficult for ds etc. (I'm making this up, obviously!)

Lunchtimes:

PE:

Assembly:

Playtimes:

What do the rest of you think? As a teacher, I think this would be ok, but then I'm very open to working with parents and welcome their ideas. Would it put other teachers' backs up?

Morning Littlefish & twocutedarlings - I get the feeling ds's teacher is the kinda teacher who thinks certain conditions dont exist ie ADHD, modulation disorder and its just a case of bad parenting. This is an assumption on my part, as ds hasnt been there too long, but i have met so many non believers over the years. Im trying hard not to judge and give the benefit of the doubt, as i myself was very sceptical to start with.

Anyhow in the info booklet i have tried to avoid speculating as to how Jacob could behave at lunchtimes, PE, assembly etc as he has never encountered these situation before and i didnt want to sound too negative or make assumptions.

I have stuck to generally. example (I dont want to bore you all with the full version)Jacob can cope with changes to routine if it is something he has done before, but he finds new experiences threatening or scary and is often reluctant to take part. He usually uses avoid (I will do it later), distraction (talks a lot and tries to change the subject) or refusal. With lots of encouragement he will usually join in and enjoys the new experience (with the exception of messy play, which he may tolerate for a short period and do to please you, rather than enjoy and have to wash his hands several times during)

I have given 2 examples of how Jacob behaved in nursery and how we dealt with it.

Hi claw3! I picked up on your AIBU thread and came across to here, where I usually come first anyway!
I just wanted to tell you at this late hour that I think you are doing really well, without being patronising, at sorting out your son's needs and getting school on track asap.
I went through all this when DS (AS) started school, and we had no idea what the problem was.
They need to be very aware of his sensory difficulties and decide what they are going to do fast - because he will remember any bad experiences for a very long time.
Lol at flushing toilet noise - that is what used to make DS hide under the table!
As a teacher, I'd be very happy for any parent to give me info and knowledge about their child's needs - you want them to be happy, so you can get on with educating them.
DS used to use an extended paintbrush, so he didn't have to risk touching it, and he wore gloves for all art activities.
Good luck!

Hi Claw

What you said makes sense about not wanting to pre-judge situations. Feel free to turn me down on this, but if you want to CAT me and send me the whole document to read through, I'd be really happy to do so if you think it would help.

Let me know.

Good ideas from Catok about the extended brushes and gloves etc. There is going to be so much for your ds to get used to at school, that things like this to encourage him to try new things, rather than overloading him all at once, are a good idea.

Morning Littlefish and Catok - Sorry had a busy weekend and unable to post.

Thank you Catok for your kind comments, not patronising at all. He is ok with using brushes to paint and very careful, so long as he can wash his hands if any gets on him. However hand painting is a definate no.

Littlefish - I would really appreciate your comments. It would be great to get a teachers perspective on it. I will invest my fiver forthworth and get catting thank you very, very much.

The best thing to do is just CAT me so that I have your e-mail address. I'll then reply so you have mine. You can then just send me a normal e-mail with your document attached.

I'll look out for your CAT.
