DS5 is 2.7y
he weighs 22lb (av for 1yr)
he is 85cm in length (av for 18mth)
his head is 48cm (av for 1yr)
(his head has not grown since beginning of April)
his torso is in 9-12mth vests
his trousers 12-18mth
his tops 1.5-2yrs

Short bodied, very long arms (his fingers almost reach his knees when hes stood, and he can reach the oposite ear with his hand over the top of his head) short legs.

the Paed said: that his "head circumference is slightly small for his weight".

hmm, well his weight is small for his age, as is his height.

so, has he got a little head or not???

if his weight is being taken into account and measurement is coming up small for that then possibly his head may be on the small side

as obviously they are aware his weight is for a yr old average and this by the sounds of it has been taken into account with measurements

i wouldnt worry yourself though ask paed for advise or explanation obviously he didnt seem overly worried or would have said this to you

did they say what is cause of slow growth?
sounds like his head circ small for age and slightly so for weight

misscutandstick · 01/01/2009 18:02

I was just re-running a conversation with the Paed and realised I hadnt a clue where he was going with this thought. Unfortunately the Paed is extremely absent-minded and tends to ramble/digress a little. Our next appt is in march, so he really wont have a clue that he even said that about his head by then, doubt he would if i asked him now!

I agree, that if he was concerned, he would be doing something about it - hes good in that way, and will organise things that DS5 needs without hesitation. I was just wondering if it made any more sense to anyone and if i was being a bit dim... or wether it didnt really make any sense at all anyway!

x-post resolutions, no, no explanation for faltering growth at all. The paed says 'he looks fine' he DOES NOT look fine at all, hes all skin and bones and tiny. He was born at term a healthy weight and size, it was only after switching from BF to formula that the growth stopped.

No allergies have been found (via blood tests) but i KNOW that he is intolerant to lots of foods. He also has GDD and is non-verbal with autistic symptoms, has little understanding and is hyposensitive. Personally i really do think that its all connected, and points to something syndrom-ish - my money is on Fragile X. but they have only just begun on blood tests, so it will be months before they find out.

misscutandstick I am ever so slightly ahead of you in the process, I think.

DD was 2.10 last time she saw the Paed, and her head circumference was 46cm, which is

Thankyou LOU, i think yours was exactly the answer i was looking for (without really knowing it) - not that i dont appreciate everyones help, thanks XXX -

DH's head is on 91st, mine is 50th, all other children except ds4 on around 50th, DS4 on 98th (but his height is 98th too). So all average or larger. Like you say tho DS5's head is in proportion to his height - TBH he looks like his head is a little top heavy, but i think thats because the rest of him is like a little rake!

From what you say, there doesnt seem to be much concern about the size of his head - its the whole of him that needs to grow a little !

thanks again for the reassurance everyone

Glad to be able to help a little. It might reassure you to specifically raise it with the Paed, though. You could just phone his secretary and ask him to give you a call re: his head and whether it concerned him. Then you can write it off if it isn't a concern, rather than wait until March worrying.
