boat - put all yr fingertips together to make front of boat shape and hold yr arms out in front of you.

tractor - I think this is like a big steering wheel. Like much bigger than you'd do for car. Pretty sure this is what mr tumble did out and about on farm ...

Tractor is using both hands to imitate tractor wheels going round. I thought it looked quite like the mime of pushing yourself in a wheelchair to look at.

mumgoingcrazy · 18/12/2008 11:15

That's great, thanks ejb!!

Thanks lou. I thought that was bus. Do you happen to know what bus is then?

Bus is the big steering wheel action.

mumgoingcrazy · 18/12/2008 11:26

oh our train here in Aus is the first and second finger hooked over and placed near the side of the head - then move hand twice forwards and backwards. The hook part is the electric hook part that runs the train. I did know the other one but can't remember it.

can i ask ? is makaton the same as sign-along? and why is there so many different sign languages? dd4 started with asl, now doing sign-along with salt, but mabey i should teach/learn makatonor bsl??????, sorry for buttin in, just had to ask?

dsrplus8 · 18/12/2008 13:15

er ...should be makaton or bsl?

RaggedRobin · 18/12/2008 21:37

makaton is just a selection of simplified signs, not an actual language. many of the signs are taken from bsl but they will be used with normal english word order. bsl is a language with its own grammar and syntax, different from english word order.

used2bthin · 18/12/2008 21:53

ooh been trying to work out what my DD is saying, she keeps pointing to her thumb with her finger is that something from Makaton? Is there a book I can buy with the signs? Or better still, a website?

eidsvold · 18/12/2008 22:06

makaton is very useful for people who have an intellectual impairment as it works on the key points in a sentence that are then signed rather than as BSL would do it - to sign the whole sentence.

Makaton in Aus was based on Auslan ( aus version of BSL) and my understanding is that makaton UK was based on BSL - so there would be some of the same signs.

HannukArabica · 18/12/2008 23:27

I reckon she's signing the letter 'A'. In BSL and Makaton each digit represents a different vowel, starting with A at the thumb and U with the little finger.

amber32002 · 19/12/2008 07:26

Makaton books of signs are available from the charity's main website - they're very good. Just put Makaton into a search engine and it's the first thing on the list, usually. I think it's great.

used2bthin · 19/12/2008 08:26

Thanks amber I will have a look, been trying to get on to a coursein my area but the woman who runs them never answers her phone!

HannukArabica that is interesting, it must be something she has picked up from Something special she sometimes watches it while I'm getting suff ready to go out. My name begins with A so I'm going to tell myself she knows and is saying it instead of mummy

used2bthin · 19/12/2008 08:27

stuff not suff!

dsrplus8 · 19/12/2008 12:13

thanx for the info, am gona pester the salt next time we see her!she should know where to get makaton "lessons" .

supportman · 19/12/2008 21:52

The Makaton sign for train is, make a fist then move in a circle at the side of your body whilst moving away and towards yourself. So it looks like the piston rod on a steam engine that moves the wheels.
