Has anyone else banked DNA (ASD)

Paed asked us if we wanted to bank DNA after the dx today, for when the tests are ready.

Now, we said no as my inclination is against teastinga and I suspect thats how the DNA discoveries will be at least directed. And lets face it, with 2 X ASD, ocd's, etc etc in our family, we know it's somewhere in the genes.

Are there any other reasons to take up her offer to talk about it in the future? Are there any positives from doing this?

Only very tenuous positive I could think of is whether they could at some point in the future develop medication based on say gene therapy to help some aspects of ASD.

That's kinda what I thought tc-not a lot of likely plusses are there?

pharmaceutico genetics (spelling?) might come in- then you can test to get the correct drug/dosage for your phenotype.

However, they can get DNA at any time very easily, so I have no idea why it would need to be 'banked'. Did they want to use it for research?

She never mentioned research; she did however press the point- we'll discuss it next time etc.

It may be she thinks we will spend the next 15 years producing small boys and if a test comes in...? Even then though- ??

lol at next 15 years producing small boys! In the pigs might fly world, it would be great if a blood test was developed that could be done early and lead to early access to SALT and floortime type early intervention (i.e. the sort that would be beneficial to any child).

It wouldn't be used like that though would it? they'd save mor cash if people just terminated so that's how it would go, which is crap- i'm not for termination purely for sn anyhow but even if I were- there ae so many factors how could the know what level a child is at? and even then- you might have a child like ds3 who is far 'better off' despite asd dx than ds1 who is about to go plummeting out of the school system at any mo with leser dx.

What would they ask you to give consent for ( on DS behalf)? Future testing that would help him as an individual or for wider research?

PeachyBidsYouNadoligLlawen · 18/12/2008 13:53

They just said would yopu like to bank some for the future if tests become available

Maybe they meant for ds2 / ds3 's sakes (NT)? For when they have famillies if they do?

I am going to ask when we see her next, 3 months.
