Fascinating article - thanks Thomcat.
It certainly resonates strongly with our experience of certain members of the medical profession over the last 3 years.

I agree.
As a salt in field of special needs, people with Downs Syndrome tend to be the ones that challenge health/education the least.

And yet I know that doctors are neanderthal in thier approach. I'm working with a couple of people with Ds at present. One os a man in his 40s who lives independently, holds down a f/t job, has tonnes of friends and manages a medical condition that necessitates daily injections. He needs minimal support.

Another is a toddler who is putting signs together at the rate of knots and has fantastic play skills, and attention of the sort that would put an NT child of twice her age to shame.

he was good on channel 4 when he was talking about the number of babies list because of CVS amnio (the 2 non-affected babies lost for every 3 with DS terminated thing).

I am utterly appalled by Clare Rayner's comments

The medical model (if its broke fix it) can be a little crude. Doctors in general know bugger all about learning difficulties anyway.

Blimey the person who responded to your post TC needs a good poke in the eye for being so patronising.

cyberseraphim · 25/11/2008 14:57

Was not a great fan of CR to start with ! but the pain and the cost to society of her ignorance and cruelty is far worse than any 'burden' imposed by a child with DS. Was she really in the DS Association ? Why ?????

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 25/11/2008 14:58

oh actually she's not responding to you -sorry ignore, (but she still deserves a poke in the eye!)

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 25/11/2008 15:01

some of those comments are utterly depressing.

moondog · 25/11/2008 15:02

Claire REayner??
What does she know about anything?
She's just a bog standard nurse.

Yes Jimjams, people really need to realise this. When I hear a sentence that starts with 'Well the paediatrician sdays...' my heart sinks

(with ref to language)

Thomcat · 25/11/2008 20:03

I know where Claire Rayner lives............hmmmmmmmmm, tempting

Oh, where have all the comments on that article disappeared to?
