Terrible morning !! (rant, sorry)

Took DD to the ophthalmologist last week. We couldn't decide whether or not there was a problem with her eyes so had an appt to take her back this morning first thing.
Had to put drops in her eyes to dilate the pupils. DH agreed to stay at home a bit longer and help me with that. DD so panicked by drops that she hurls herself backwards out of DH's arms and smashes against the oven. Safety glass on the front of the oven smashes into 1000s of tiny pieces. Glass everywhere!
Eventually get DD to opthalmologist who is pissed off because we are late for the appointment which she had made specially for DD, although she eventually gave in when she realised what has happened. Turns out DD has severe long sight in her left eye so will need glasses and a patch on her right eye for at least two hours a day. AARGH. How am I going to make her wear glasses and a PATCH. Apparently this should have been picked up before she was TWO. All these professionals we are seeing and no-one has ever suggested checking her eyesight - we only got this appt on the back of standard age 4 check-up. Apparently left visual cortex now completely underdeveloped as a result of constantly compensating with right eye which has perfect vision.
I know that this is not life threatening but I'm upset for DD. DH is upset for DD. On top of everything else I'm going to have to fork out at least 200 euros to get the oven fixed, or 300 odd to buy a new (less good quality) one (current one was in the flat when I bought it and much better quality than I could afford new!).
Sorry, had to come on here have and rant!!

oh god what a nightmare with the oven and optician. doesn't sound like the safety glass was all that safe.... hope that the patching etc works, and that the long sight is reversible to a degree.

TotalChaos · 25/11/2008 11:07

she doesn't like telly does she, I was going to suggest telly or computer as a "bribe" for patching. I'm a very slack mum, bribery and corruption rules

BriocheDoree · 25/11/2008 11:36

Oh no, she does like telly so yes, I think bribery and corruption are definitely going to be the thing!

Bloody hell - that is quite a morning!
DS is very likely to have severe VI and we have been told that the ever changing light from the telly is good stimulation for him. I know its not the same for your DD (thankfully - I hope she will be corrected to a good level) but think of it less as bribery and more as essential stimulation ! Hope she is OK too - you've all had a tough start to the day x

slightlycrumpled · 25/11/2008 12:43

Blimey, hope your day improves!

I think bribery may be the way forward and getting her to wear the glasses will get easier as soon as she realises that things are clearer with them on. The patch well it's worth remembering how blurry it will all be when she is wearing it. It's so worth it though.

Sticker charts always worked well in this house for patching.

Good luck.

telly for patching time.
fwiw, (in a 'shutting the stable door' kind of way), we find laying on the sofa a much cheaper method of doing the eye drops lol. did you have two types? if only one, they would have stung... the first lot are supposed to anaesthetise a bit...
has no-one noticed a squint? that is quite late...

magso · 25/11/2008 13:59

Poor dd! You have all had a difficult day! Ds hated drops and the blur that follows them!
4 is not too late (and a common age to pick up 1 long sighted/1 good eye)- but may need more 'active' patching than a younger child. Once the vision is good enough in the poorer eye (it will probably be vague to start and frustrating for dd to be patched) computor style games (if liked) can be helpful to speed the improvment up. Anything visually interesting the child really likes and wants to see. (colouring/ dot to dot/ bead pictures/cooking/biscuit icing with little decorations - whatever appeals - perhaps inform father christmas/family with suitable suggestions?

oh no hope you had a better afternoon

Mitchell81 · 25/11/2008 19:05

Sorry you had a tough day, hope the patches/bribery works

madmouse · 25/11/2008 21:04

oh dear what a nightmare

good luck with the patching, I concurr that bribery is justified here

by the way the safety glass did what it was meant to do: shatter on impact without shards and sharp edges

of course what it did not mean to do is land you a large bill [grrrr]

BriocheDoree · 26/11/2008 05:42

Oh yes, I realise that's what the glass is meant to do, just a bit of a shock for poor DD!
Fortunately a few phone calls located a company who can sell me just the glass door for 90 euros so long as we can fit it ourselves which is a bit more reasonable. As for DD, we'll see how she gets on today when we go to get glasses. She was up at 5 this morning and DS is ill as well so I'm going to have a couple of crabby kids to drag to the opticians. Fortunately there's a good toy shop nearby so I think they bribery and corruption might start there!!
