Calpol and hyperactivity?

Does calpol (6+) have additives that make hyperactivity worse?
DS1 had a temp at 2am this morning so we gave him 2 spoonfuls. He didn't go to sleep until 5am. Was up and down constantly.
This got me thinking - he has always responded really well to calpol - bouncing around again after half an hour (even after breaking his arm!!) We always thought it waorked really well, but now I am wondering if the E numbers in it are disagreeing with him.
We never give him brightly coloured sweets or diet coke because they make him go crazy for about 2 days. He once was covered in a rash after eating a fruit winder at a party!!
Can anyone give me any insight??
Thanks

All children's syrups contain sodium benzoate as a preservative, which could be triggering your ds off. Some brands have flavourings and sweeteners (usually aspartame) which can be iffy too. It's getting harder to get syrups with sugar rather than additives because we've all been led to believe that sugar is bad for you, but personally I'd rather deal with something familiar than an unknown and potentially problematic chemical. I try to go for sugar where I can, although now ds is older I give him half a paracetamol caplet instead of syrup.

there is a sugar free calpol but a nutritionalist is more likely to suggest a calpol free version from theraputic supplememnts or herbs instead, camomile might also help as it relaxes if you can add some of this to a night time drink and magnesium will relax children who can become hyper active
sugar is the evil of all evils when it comes to children.....

some kids are affected by the sugar free version, some by the normal one - we prefer the sugary one here as they are largely sweetener/ aspartame free... maybe you had switched without noticing?
but then we like medised too... particularly for the soporific effects of the antihistamine... (although dd2 doesn't get often in case it compromises her breathing...)

We try to avoid sugarfree versions too ( sugar is a lesser evil for ds than sweeteners)! I was once told (by hospital staff) the 'perking up' on calpol was due to differences in brain chemistry. They gave us a white low additive paracetamol syrup.

My ds is very sensitive to artificial colours and flavours, and like already mentioned below - sodium benzoate and aspartame can often be really bad for asd kids. These substances affect the neurotransmitters in the brain!
We don't give paracetamol (It depletes glutathione - you need this for detox purposes) but give ibuprofen. 1/4 - 1/2 tablet (50 - 100 mg) ground up in a drink of juice or lemon and honey.
Does the job with out the swinging from the rafters!
