How can I make it mean something? She has started to make a pointy finger and is just looking at it at the moment. I'm so excited by this and am probably jumping the gun here, but will this naturally progress into pointing to things or following my point or can I do somthing to put this pointy finger to good use??

She is nealy 17 months. Am so happy I've been grinning like a chesire cat all day!

You can physically prompt her to point at things you know she finds interesting.
Enlist help of others,so if for example you know she is happy when Daddy comes in, physically prompt her to point and when she does, get her father to laugh or smile or shout 'hello' in an exagerrated fashion or come and tickle her/throw her about etc.

Basically, make her understand initially that pointing will get her something excititng or interesting.

Great news.

Better still-make your own little book and fill it with pictures of things you know excite her.

Google images great for pictures of products.

This is great advise, I love the idea of making our own book for her. I'll fill it with animals I think, that always gets her going.

I'll definately rope daddy in too.

Thank you so much!! xx

I got ds2 pointing by playing constant games of "where's the clock?" "where's the balloon?" etc, and making a big deal of pointing to it. He looked at his pointed finger for a few days before he started pointing properly, then there was no stopping him. He even points with both hands when he gets very enthusiastic!

Thanks kettlechip, so far she's done lots of looking at it and waving it around. It's found it's way up her nose a few times too. She's very interested in the book we have made but is yet to actually point at something or follow a point. We have to do a lot of object play in Portage so I think your "where's the....." can be incorporated in this. Thanks!
