Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Need to vent.

Apologies if this upset anyone, though I dare say most have had to tolerate far worse comments but this really upset.

My fellow students and I were in a new building for the first time today, one in which the majority of students have special needs.

I'm sad to say that many of my fellow students were laughing at the work of the students with special needs, and within their hearing range.

There were posters of their artwork on the wall, photos of them on work experience and on trips.

I said don't be so rude, one said oh it's cute that's all, what do you mean cute I asked, she said well it's cute because it's so babyish, it's not as though they're really learning anything are they? Nothing worthwhile she said.

Why shouldn't they be as proud of their achievements as the nursing students?

Am I overreacting or is it a little worrying that nursing students have such a poor attitude towards people with learning disabilities?

No. Fuckers. Hate them already. And to think they may end up looking after our LOs with that attitude

alfiemama · 07/11/2008 21:11

I think they should be reported, think its disgusting, if it was something racist they wouldnt get away with it.

ditto, feelingbitbetter with bells on

report them
Please

needmorecoffee · 08/11/2008 09:12

how could they still have those disablist attitudes.
Hope to god none end near near dd as nurses. Total disrrespect.

HelensMelons · 08/11/2008 09:31

Poor attitude is being kind.

They should be reported. We are all equal.

They need to look at their attitudes and their disciminatory comments and the only way to do that is if they are reported because at the end of the day they will be nursing all sorts of people - so it's not fair on the patient(s) but they also need to know what their limitations are.

Now I am having a rant.

That is really quite scary that these imbeciles are going to be in charge of peoples well being, including our gorgeous children.

Definately report them, they are training for the wrong job!

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 08/11/2008 14:30

Another one saying report them. Or at least as a tutor to run a session on learning disability awareness. Remind them that they will be coming into contact with family member of those with LD's and although the individual with LD's may not know they're being laughed at family members will and are likely to respond unfavourably.

I'm afraid I would see red if I saw a nursing student treating my son with such disrespect. Perhaps print out this thread and show them.

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 08/11/2008 14:31

ask not as a tutor

mm22bys · 08/11/2008 15:27

Yes report. I would not want any of them any near any of our los (or anybody's los!).

mm22bys · 08/11/2008 15:29

I would not want any of them anywhere near to any of our los

MannyMoeAndJack · 08/11/2008 17:50

This shows how ignorant your fellow students are and this must be addressed. As you are training to be nurses, then it's safe to say that you will all have to care for and treat patients with the full range of disabilities at some point in either your training or in your ensuring careers. Why wait until the day that your fellow students actually encounter a disabled patient? I don't know how many trainee nurses there are in your group but you could perhaps show this thread to your tutor(s) and request that the subject of disabilities is covered in a tutorial? Perhaps have your tutor(s) pass this thread round as a handout.

MannyMoeAndJack · 08/11/2008 17:51

er, ensuing careers!

slightlycrumpled · 08/11/2008 17:56

and

It's outrageous, please report them.

bubblagirl · 08/11/2008 18:04

i would also agree with reporting you cant be agood nurse while laughing at disability

i wa sin nursing and would never have done this you do the job because you care for eveyone you do not make fun

this needs to be reported as not proffessional at all and would knock one of them out if took piss out of my ds with sn

you need compassiona nd understanding to be asuccessful nurse clearly they lack this

needmorecoffee · 08/11/2008 18:09

those students need some disability training or they will be making unwarranted assumptions about disabled pateints in their care.
'he doesn't understand so we wont tell him'
'she doesn't feel pain like normal people'
'it doesn't matter if his dinner is cold cos he's intellectually impaired'
etc etc

bullet123 · 08/11/2008 21:03

Definitely needs reporting.
