My dd is 2.5 and has cerebral palsy - I'm trying to avoid getting a special needs buggy at the moment, mainly cos I'm a lazy arse and they tend to be a bit bulky and heavy. My dd fits easily into her Maclaren Quest and I'm sure will for some time. i guess it would be worth going to a buggy shop and trying some out. I often see Maclarens with very big kids in (some 4 or 5 year olds who have a long walk home are picked up from school in them).

I have a P&T Sport, which dd1 still fits into when necessary (long days out/queues/round shop etc). she is 4.3, and not a small girl by any means, but still fits ok

I looked at the loola when dd1 was anout 2, as her Pliko was getting a bit battered, and I didn't think then it would last her for very long, and certainly not up to 4. couldn't imagine her in one now (but stress that I haven't owned one, just tried her out in a display one)

when dd2 was small we had an inglesina which was quite roomy. dd1 fitted in it until she was 3, I know, but doubt she would now (but she is very tall)

I still use my e3 for DS4 who is 3 1/2 but I am getting fed up with lugging it in and out of the car.

My friend used a mutsy for her DS until he was about 5 or so.

It was a Mutsy Urban Rider check out this very odd website

My son had a Maclaren Techno - fold up umbrella type - slightly cushioned seat and back, low seat so that he could learn to get out and into the seat by himself. Harness was just OK but nearly bought a larger one from Crelling. The buggy did not look any different from the usual buggies. Great too as the castors were big so could do kerbs better than the smaller castors. Bear in mind you will be pushing a heavier child so look for easy of moving the buggy. This was 6 yrs or so ago so Maclaren may have updated this model - possibly Quest - not sure - I think I saw Techno 2 yrs ago at Mothercare. You may be able to claim back VAT (if it applies for buggies) if you are buying something for disability needs. Does your local wheelchair nhs centre supply standard Maclaren buggies - I know they do supply Major Maclaren buggies and Convaid Cruisers - they are much loved too by some.

Further thoughts - have you had an OT to see if you need anything at home eg seating at the kitchen table, bathing and so on.

Consider applying for the Blue Badge - from 2 I think. Also DLA. Sorry gone off topic!

Like HBoB I'd recommend a Maclaren if you want something for everyday use and in & out the car. The Maclaren XT is a bit more expensive than the Quest but has larger wheels. Ours has lasted very well.

My DS is nearly 4, weighs 35lbs and fits a Mclaren Techno XT no probs. Getting him out of it to let the baby in is the problem! They are compatible with buggyboards but I've not been brave enough try him on that yet.

We've just got a P&T Sport as we have two toddlers now. It's great. DD1 is nearly four now but is still small so it should last us a while. We also have a Mountain Buggy Terrain that still fits her too.

another vote for phil and teds sport

my ds is only 9months but i recently had my friend's year old in it for a bit, she fitted fine and it was still light to push.

I love it

I wouldn't recommend the Loola - my ds had to come out of it at 22 months because it wsn't wide enough for him to be comfortable (he's big but not huge) & it is very heavy (pushing & lifting). I'd be amazed if it fitted any child up to 4.

Suggest the Jane Powertrack 360. My son stayed in it till he was around 5/6 comfortably. It has a wide seat and the bigger wheels with tyres make manouvering easy. Now has Maclaren Elite at age 7 payed for by health authority.

mountain buggies are big and also really easy to push. i love mine

Romy7 · 07/11/2008 20:15

any 3 wheeler jogger should be fine. we went to major at 3.

Buckets · 08/11/2008 09:25

P&Ts weigh more than Mclarens don't they?
