I have just taken delivery of DSs only xmas pressie from us this year. As he's only 5 months old I've decided that today is Christmas Day and I am going to spend the next hour or so, before his Dr.s appt putting together a 'Jumparoo'.
He loves to 'stand' (on me or Dad) and bounce, but at 18lb now it's getting harder to hold him up (and he hurts), so it looks just the ticket.
He'd better like it, I nearly collapsed when I saw the bleedin' price!

Look at www.fledglings.org.uk They are doing "sensory stockings" for children with disabilities this year, c£36. I am getting one for DS who is 13 and has severe autism so I think they can cater for any/all ages and disabilities. Email them and they will get back to you with some questions to help them choose suitable items. I am doing it so I don't have to worry about the dreaded Xmas gift and anything else I get will be a bonus.

TBH I don't have a clue, so far i've got him a new torch - beyond that i'm stuck.

Love the photos of your ds, he's gorgeous, is he always smiling?

needmorecoffee · 04/11/2008 19:30

bugger all. At 4 dd hasb't noticed Xmas.

Well, Gabes jumparoo is now together and taking up 1/2 my living room (the other half is covered in playmat, playgym and toys).
He's had a bit of a dickie tum today so I've only just tried him in it.
I think the verdict was: undecided.
Will try again tomorrow when he's hopefully feeling a bit better.

We won't be buying him anything else at all and I imagine it'll get more difficult in the future. He has lots of toys, but we've only just managed to force an interest in even touching some of them. Others don't seem to exist to him. He'd be quite happy to look up at the light all day, if I'd let him.

Will have a look at Fledglings, sounds like a great idea!

dd getting a "Something special DVD" as her signing is coming on.

I have found her some wooden playfood that velcros together.I think she will like it as she loves sticking/unsticking velcro and the sound it makes.

A little radio for her bedroom. She loves music when she goes to bed.

A mirror so she can look at herself, she is a bit obsessed with mirrors.

For stocking fillers, bubbles, balloons.Chunky felt tips, and a flashing light up ball from the £shop.

glitteryb6 · 04/11/2008 22:04

yeah keyboards are a big hit too but he's got about 5 of various sizes!

eidsvold · 05/11/2008 06:04

then she is getting some board games, a mr potato head ( help with fine motor skills), a book and some new pjs, think there is an arty crafty sort of book too.

Marne · 05/11/2008 09:40

MommyUpNorth · 05/11/2008 10:07

ds has finally caught on to the animal sounds we've been working on for ages, so I'm looking for more of the 'talking' puppet things. We have the duck, and I'm hoping to get a dog, cow & pig (anyone know where they might sell them?).

Also got the vibrating jump about ball thing which he played with at the sensory room and absolutely loved!

r3dh3d · 05/11/2008 10:58

DD1 is getting a waffle maker. Not to operate (dear lord what a terrifying thought! ) but as an additional source of Dairy Free Foods That Crunch. As you say, NMC, what do you buy a child that can't play?

lourobert · 05/11/2008 11:36

Ds is getting of the fledglings sensory stockings and also one of those spa mats thingys for the bath as he loves the bath and finds the shower being aimed at him very funny....thought he night like the sensation of the bubbles....?

ALso a soft play farmayard as 'old McDonald' is his favourite song! and thought it would be nice to introduce some animals!!!

PeachyFizzesLikeADampSquibb · 05/11/2008 11:44

well ds4 is 7 mnths (and 2 lbs smaller- he's a tiny fellow!) and is getting odds and ends- a pushalong for the future, that sort of thing. He's not sn.

ds3 is getting mainstream toys but those aimed at 3 years younger, iyswim? duplo, night garden stuff etc.

ds1- share in a wii fit, lego- retty usual- but he wants a guinness records book, which will be classic as terrtory I think! and a robot, he loves robots.

ds2- share as above, but lego, games- all the usual sociable stuff.

Davros · 05/11/2008 14:19

That spa mat thingy is one of the best things I ever bought!! DS and DD love it. Also a rocking chair went down well and those big exercise (Swiss?) ball things. For a littlie maybe a small space hopper, to sit on but to roll on?

MannyMoeAndJack · 05/11/2008 14:28

My ds will get some kind of hard-wearing music toy in the 18mth-36mth age range. He knows nothing about Xmas so it's not really a problem - he has no expectations.

pinkelly · 05/11/2008 14:35

dear NMC. my ds2 (12) has gross motor difficulties so can't play on his own. BUT he loves toys that give a dramatic effect with little effort...keyboards, shake & go cars (fisherprice), till drawers that open (ping) with a slight press. Have a wander round the shops.
There are toys out there that are fun, we just have to look that bit harder x

MannyMoeAndJack · 05/11/2008 14:50

NMC - I don't know how much movement your dd has in her arms/wrists/hands but does she like music toys? Nursery rhymes in the background, or those bracelets with bells on that can be worn on the wrist? It's not easy to buy for my ds either - but for different reasons; so many seemingly innocuous toys become bashing/tapping weapons in his hands!!

Hope you find something that your dd likes.
