I suppose living in the west of scotland - it could be true for me but apart from that, I'm not really convinced. Autism is now a common diagnosis and so I suppose it can be 'linked' to many factors without telling us anything about any causal mechanism.

i cant decide - or ...

BriocheDoree · 04/11/2008 08:06

Well...melmamof3 was saying the other day that her DS goes bonkers when it rains...
So confusing all this stuff!

Widemouthfrog · 04/11/2008 08:10

All a bit bizarre for me I'm afraid.

filz · 04/11/2008 08:13

surely everyone in the ukl would be autistic?

cyberseraphim · 04/11/2008 08:20

who is the gloomy person in the picture ? A despairing autism researcher sheltering from the rain?

I doubt its the actual rain. Maybe grey overcast skies all year round. But then we'd all have autism!
More likely to be vaccinations, pollutants in water or chemicals in food. Seems slightly more obvious, putting toxic stuff into the body than, ahem, rain.

it's got to be bollocks, surely?

cory · 04/11/2008 09:53

It's got to be. How could you possibly isolate all the other factors in these particular regions? There may be plants, there may be types of industry, there may be genetic differences. Also, are these differences really great enough to be statistically significant?

cyberseraphim · 04/11/2008 09:56

Are strange theories 'linked' to researchers' need to justify funding ?

OP posts:
magso · 04/11/2008 14:46

Well we all need rain! Without rain we would not have rivers/ ports/ canals/ heavy industry/powerplants - Nah I cant see the link!! Bizarre indeed!

deeeja · 04/11/2008 14:57

I have a theory about this theory. The US being the biggest polluting country in the world, would invariably have some hot-spots where the density of air-borne toxic chemicals is alot heavier than the average. So any rain falling in these areas is likely to be toxic chemical rain, hence dangerous for all pregnant mothers, and babies that already have a genetic predisposition to developing autism.

But ofcourse, saying rain causes autism, is great attention grabbing journalism, and just adds to the stupid idea that to find a solution or definate determining factors for autism is laughable. Very irresponsible journalism!

amber32002 · 04/11/2008 17:15

My theory is that if you're in a country where you're indoors a lot because it's always raining, you're more likely to be driven to distraction by a child's autistic behaviour and more likely to seek a diagnosis. If you're somewhere warm and sunny, you can escape to the garden and a nice bit of sunshine and it all seems more survivable.

Buckets · 04/11/2008 18:33

Did I read it right that they only compared 3 states? Very scientific

HRHSaintMamazon · 04/11/2008 18:38

oh how utterly ridiculous.
We were told Ds was probably autistic when he was 2.4
how does rainfall until he is aged 3 going to make any difference to that?

Also wh is it that i have the exact amount of rain as my mother and yet none of my siblings are autistic? or my neighbours?

Its implying that Autism is not something a child is born with but something that could be prevented.

how come you get autistic children in places with very little rain?

its such a stupid bloody study, ui cant even bother to read it all.

anonandlikeit · 04/11/2008 19:24

I did wonder when I read the article this morning what you would all think about it.

Personally i think its a load of old Bollocks, but maybe i'm just

I live in one of the driest parts of the country ds2 still has ASD, but he does HATE the rain.

PeachyFizzesLikeADampSquibb · 04/11/2008 19:28

i knew they'd be nto TV with it sharpish! Crap asd mums must have overdosed their kids on TV

Well OK- so explain ds3?

Df diet- check

no MMR- check

reduced tv- check

gf diet- check

bf- check

no rain- oh FFS! this is Wales- you cannot increase the rainfall! its at 100& already

[wink}

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 07/11/2008 19:01

I thought this was ancient. This was the whole point of the TV theory- it was higher in States with more rainfall therefore children were inside watching TV....

cyberseraphim · 07/11/2008 19:27

But this is academia - 'reduce, reuse, recycle' the pointless 'research'. There might be a conference in it, though probably not in a rainy location.

the problem with research like this is that they don't spare a thought for the poor mums with pnd. i will have to move to centerparcs now and get a sun lamp and giant hair dryer

jg3kids · 09/11/2008 16:21

Hey Peachy,

You forgot boozy pregnant mum. They (media) reported on that recently. So that must be true!!!

Actually, in all seriousness, there's lots of papers out there about vit D and autism. Google it and see.
I personally suffer from SAD I think

Jane
mum to ds 3 1/2 autism

dsrplus8 · 09/11/2008 16:34
