I've not seen Rain Man in years - not since I learned so much more about autism

God its distressing!

I just keep sitting here thinking "NO!!! You can't do that to him/his routine etc"

I haven't seen it in years either, don't think i'd like to now.

Funny how your ideas of a dx change isn't it? (or is it evolve?.) I spoke to a Mum today who has just got a dx and realised how far I have come over the last 3 or so years. But I also realised how used I had got to DS3's speech etc- he was yabbering on and lately I have thought well maybe SALT are right and he's almost better; her face was when I said that was the best his talking gets! (SALT have decided some of his speech problems are physical which doesn't warrant SALT so he might not get it after April).

You get in a bubble and everything nrmalises; I find it really hard to know where ds3 is in terms of severity- there are so many less severe kids I know so he seems severe, but a new one started rugby today who clearly had more severe asd and that was a bit of a jolt too.

It is really strange, even though DD only has a few tendencies, the mother in me just shrieks out (have stopped watching now). She refused to speak to my mum because I changed my hairstyle (mum was trying to jolly her into it, whereas I just said sorry for not warning her, hence the ignoring mum not me ) - I felt mean for forgetting to warn her, let alone any of the stuff in the film.

I also forget that not everyone needs 10/5/2 min warnings before leaving anywhere - other children look at me

I watched it again last weekend for the first time in about 15 years - I felt just the same.

Tis v v realistic - now I actually know what autism is, which I didn't when I last watched it (as a child).

First visit from the tooth fairy?

Whatever you do keep the tooth!

Thankfully I remembered that DSis always kept her teeth (and I did, but because she did so it seemed normal ), so tooth fairy took it away and put it somewhere safe... ready for the morning with "The tooth fairy left me a penny!!!!" "I want my tooth!!!!!!"

I love that book! We very nearly lost DD's tooth - I thought she swallowed it but it was on her skirt. I had a feeling that tooth losing would be a very big deal, so have been reading the book a lot for the last 12 months

I had a sudden realisation moment of "Sh*t - teeth coming out will be Not Good" and started sliding charlie and lola into book selection as often as possible. We realised it was wobbly early on, so then had a lot of time to prepare too

Peachy said 'SALT have decided some of his speech problems are physical which doesn't warrant SALT so he might not get it after April).

What the F!!! Course it warrants SALT. All of dd's speech issues are physical cos she has CP so she gets SALT.
Go smack them around a bit!

Peachy · 26/10/2008 11:43

Ah but what they are saying is that it can't be improved in this instance.

DS1 has offered to go sort them out. part of me says PMSl good on yer but I have to hide that part in case he takes it as a positive for the aggression iyswim- but its not unfeasible that he will end up with his brothers as a main advocate for ds3, so him having some of that could be a positive.

TotalChaos · 26/10/2008 11:47

oh they are being complete gits - as surely even if some aspects couldn't be improved they should be looking at strategies to deal with that, not just washing their hands.

Peachy · 26/10/2008 11:56

I know, I need to see what we are offered in April. They have this thing though that if you score 'normal' (their word not mine before 2shoes smacks me LOL) in one of 5 areas then you cease to be a priority; normal is 16th eprcentile, he got 17th on understanding but still is in the 1- 5 % on all else.

You know what the buggers are like

needmorecoffee · 26/10/2008 12:21

arrange a meeting. We've got a big one coming up with the SALTS and PCAS that I inisted on. I'm taking a friend with severe CP who is a disability rights lawyer.
DD still hasn't got a communication aid and their excuse was 'she is too physically disabled'.
