Im not expecting to get higher as she sleeps most nights. Do you think we will get mobility for AS, dd refusses to walk far and is a very slow walker, last week shje decided to stop walking as we were crossing a busy road and i had to drag her accross because a car was comming. She is able to walk but has poor balance and is very sensitive to the sound of traffic. We walk to school most days but a 10 minute walk takes dd half an hour.

My only advice to anyone filling out those forms, is to think about your worse day and then put that down.. other wise you dont get anywhere and have to fight at appeals.. i am talking from experience, the CAB are brilliant for helping to complete these forms, i have done so many over the years for own daughter and also for friends....just slap it on with a trowel if you want to get anywhere. If anyone would like more help or would just like to tallk about these forms then just email me, i am only to pleased to help.

Good luck hun with your claim.

Yes, it is quite possible to get mobility for AS (usually lower rate). Just give instances such as you have in your post and point out the differences between your child and an NT child of the same age.
This is the vital point when applying for DLA for children-you must point out that you would not normally be having to assist a child of this age in this way.

Thanks, i have put down what dd is like on a bad day (which is 5 out of 7 days of the week), i have also put that she can wake in the night and explained the worst nights. I dont think she wakes enough for us to get higher. Im only expecting lower rate realy, i was'nt realy going to bother as we already claim higher rate for her little sister (ASD). We can't get mobility for dd2 as she is too young.

If it's lower rate mobility she won't get it until she's 5. However, write down everything relevant so they have an accurate a picture as possible.

Ys definitely 5. theys ent out ds3's amounts the day before he turned 5

may ahve t claim again next year for that if we're broke but don't want to, nightmare and we've been awarded until he's 16

been wondering about dla for dd,she already gets high rate care and mobility as she has ASD and hemi and uses a wheelchair, but school have told me that they "dont see" any of the ASD in her,and that the only problem they see is her toileting or lack of,so i presume they are going to do a very positive report for dla, which wont help us at all as dd is as a lot of asd children are, quiet and passive at school and a nightmare at home.

ive got to reclaim this month and just wondering if anyone has come across this scenario and what happened.

(sorry for the hijack marne)

Hi Marne,
how old is your dd?
my ds is 3 1/2. We got mob component from 3 (took 7 mos of fighting but we got it backdated)
he has autism. We were told many times he couldn't get it til 5, but that's wrong - so we battled on, and won

Jenk1, can you go through the ICD 10 or DSM IV with them and say which parts are relevant to her being on the spectrum?
Ds1 gets mid rate care, which was fine for him as he is asleep before 11 pm most nights and once he's asleep he stays asleep until morning. Well, apaprt from very briefly waking up to scream for the bedroom light to go on, but that's neither here nor there. I'm pretty sure he would warrant the low mobility rate now as well, but I'm holding off applying until next year when his renewal is due. Hopefully then he'll get mid rate care and low rate mobility.

its cos she was dx,d privately, and CAMHS are due to go in soon to observe her,so the school wont take note till CAMHS say i suppose.

Thats my next battle, with CAMHS as i suspect they will say no to ASD and prob just "Autistic Traits" but the consultant told us in july that dd has attention difficulties and hyperactivity so we shall see.

Marne · 23/10/2008 19:59

Dd1 will be 5 in feb, dd2 isn't 3 until April. I can see why we can't get it for dd2 as she can still go in a pushchair (even though she is the size of dd1)

I wish i wrote more on the form, today walking home from school was a nightmare as she made a huge fuss, walked at a snails pace and refussed to walk. Some days she almost has me in teers as everyone is stairing at us , if i pick her up in the car i get comments as we only live 10 minutes walk away from the school.

When we go somewhere with Ds1 then nine times out of ten he either gets upset ends up lying down and refusing to move, shouting "I have to run off" (not literally, he just moves a few yards away or runs in a circle), screams, cries, gets distracted by things, needs constant prompting or if he is happy then he's very excitable and loud. He also has delayed understanding and no sense of danger in regard to other people so would be very vulnerable if he got lost.
