Dyslexia? Something else?

Hi,

Please be kind here ladies, this is my first post about this!

My parents were told when i was a child that i was dyslexic, i am not, but often i think v v quickly and mis-type words. I am left handed and they also said this was related. I know I have trouble sometimes, but also was a v v high acheiver at school/work.

My son has just started school and is also reading like I did, words from back to front so b-u-t when sounded out he repeats a word beginning with 't'. does that make sense?

he doesnt re-recognise words that quickly unless it is a letter, then he is ok, but put them together and he is confused and blurts out the first thing that comes into his head, like i used to. my dad taught me to read and then i came on leaps and bounds, so i am going to try my dads approach which i cannot remember exactly (he is going to sit with us at the weekend), but i know it isnt like thay teach now.

one family member mentioned dyslexia and after looking at a few things i suppose a cpl of signs fit, expecially saying things like 'aminal' instead of 'animal' but he rarely does that now.

any ideas??

TIA

Sorry i dont know an much about dyslexia, however i do think you may be expecting a little bit to much of him, he has only just started school, he is bound to find somethings a bit confusing. So long as he is happy at school, give him chance to get to grips learning his phonics and wait and see how he goes.

thanks, i do hope you are right, but want to help him before he gets labelled the stupid child etc.

most childrens reading book in reception dont even have words in, if he has a book with words in then he is doing fine!!.

dont panic about him getting a label!! you have to sweat blood and guts before you get one of them!!

Hi

I don't know much about dyslexia either, but agree with 2CD. It is early days in your ds school life, so it may be wise to observe him closely for a while. Having said that, I am also an advocate of trusting your instincts. I spent dd's first 3 years at school being told she was 'fine' and now she is going through an ASD dx. That doesn't mean it will be the same situation with your ds, but do bear it in mind. Good luck

I recommend "Toe by Toe" as a workbook to work through at home, really helping my DS (but didn't start using it until he was 7.).
