Hi, my mum works with a lovely lady who has just found out her ds may have ASD/AS. He is 11 years old. Last week she had a phone call from the school saying her ds had been taking photo's of his private bits and had been showing the over boys in his class, his mum is very upset about this, she's still trying to come to terms with him possibly being autistic and she's unsure how to handle this. I have no experience of older children with autism as my girls are only 2 and 4.

Has anyone got any advice i can give her?

Sorry, mine are younger too (8,5,3) - have had my share of 'incidents' though. Don't have any advice as such but if it was me (probably will be one day!) I think once I'd explained to him why what he did was wrong - don't know what his understanding is like? - I'd move on and not dwell on it. It happened, it's in the past. 11 year old boys do daft stuff all the time, regardless of SN! I had a friend at college who photographed his own poo and showed it to people - he was 19??

thanks seuss, she said he has always been realy shy about sex etc, but now he's talking too openly about it and the school are worried about his behaviour. I guess she just needs to explain to him that you can't talk to people openly about privatr body parts and sex. Aparently they have onlyy just noticed that he me be autistic due to problem at school, he's behind and finds it hard to concentrate in class. From what i have heard from my mum he sounds more AS than ASD.

My ds (11) has a ds of aspergers.
He wouldn't dream of doing this sort of thing tbh but i have a friend who's younger boy would.
I find social stories very good for my boy...rather than a lecture talking to. (you may as well talk to yourself) So.. it's a concrete visual story about the behaviour you want to change and why it is undesirable which you can read over and over.

Actually i had a very similar experience to this, DS1 (ADHD+) was 14 at the time and thought what a fabbo idea it would be to 'woo' a prospective girlfriend with a bit of a film of his amazing...errr 'talents' of 'manual dexterity' IYKWIM , from his phone. I explained to him that the police would not look kindly on this kind of film and would hate for him to be imprisoned for indecency towards a girl under 16... and made it very clear that this should not happen again... as far as i can tell it hasnt, and we are a REALLY small village, so i assume it hasnt been passed on anywhere. I was also going to suggest social stories about private parts and socially appropriate behaviour around sexuality/genitals.

I guess in some ways it's good that he isn't shy about sex and stuff anymore, ideal time to explain the boudaries etc - even really obvious stuff which he probably won't just 'pick-up' as he goes along.

I hope he can get a diagnosis quickly - 11 is really old for them to be just finding out. AS or ASD, it must be mild I guess?
