the woman who murdered her disabled daughter

At least her daughter's disability didn't grant her any leniency.

what a shame It was allowed to get as bad as it did, so sad for the poor child and dad.

The authorities only seem to get involved in the 'easy' cases, such as that woman who was jailed for 5mths for biting her 5yr old son (after he'd apparently hurt his baby sister in some way). How many more times will we have to read about the truly tragic cases where there has been a real cry for help which has been ignored or fobbed off?

And how many more times will we read the hoary old defence from SS/the authorities of, 'sorry guv, but on the evidence we had, nobody could've predicted it would end as it did'.

Well blow me down but tell me, who in this world has access to a crystal ball?! This 'get out of jail' free card gets used nearly every time a child neglect/child abuse case ends in tragedy.

I still don't get why if she was turning up drunk to pick up her daughter no-one reported her. Shouldn't people who care for children have child protection policies to cover this kind of thing? The evidence must of pointed more to murder than manslaughter but I do wish they'd put her back in secure hospital.

with you on that one pippinjo

It's just really hard to believe that some people are just evil and there may be no 'reason' behind it. It's a very depressing thought.

saint2shoes · 24/09/2008 21:54

some people are though.

It harks back to the Victoria Climbie scenario a bit for me, based on what I've read so far.

She clearly had 'issues', but was woefully undersupported and so was her husband. Again, that doesnt excuse what she did, but, I do wonder whether had she received adequate support or had her pleas taken more seriously, she could have been prevented from doing this evil act.

'I do wonder whether had she received adequate support or had her pleas taken more seriously'

And there's the rub. Supporting somebody and taking their calls for help seriously means spending money and as we all know, SS and similar will do anything to avoid doing precisely that - at all costs it seems.

I think its a tragic story, the little girl sounded a delight and its such a shame that the mother didn't or couldn't see all the wonderful things that her child COULD do. We all have children with varying conditions and I suppose we are lucky enough to have the "stop/help" button in us that she obviously didn't have. Networks and support groups such as this and local ones help us all have a rant and rave at someone and ask for help - who knows if she ever had anyone to talk to or even if her health visitor suggested any of these to her?? A combination of drink/depression/embarrassment all led to a tragic end of a life - the real tragedy is that it wasn't her own she took but that of a vulnerable child with a disability who sounded full of life.

She had many choices open to her if she wasn't happy with her lot - she could have walked out and left the family home - they would have been better off without her - she could have asked for help - or she could have just taken her own life and we may have felt some pity for her not getting the right help. Just too sad that she took her little girl's life and her Dad and all the family will be the ones to miss her forever more.

A very sad story, my heart goes out to the father.
