DS1 went surfing today!

It was part of an annual event called Breaking the Barrier. Special 'double' surfboards are used that he could stand on along with an instructor.

It was BRILLIANT. His slot was at 9.15 - the instructor plus a helper with lots of experience of learning disabilities. The beach was full of kids with autism and LD's. DS1 loved it- I wasn't sure he would do it (in fact I was about 80% convinced he wouldn't) because he doesn't really know what surfing is (well he does now), and it can be a bit hit and miss getting him into the sea. He didn't even mind the white out. And the instructor was great just yanked him out and plonked him back on the board.

We brought him in after half an hour. He was freezing, but did not want to come in, kept pointing back out to sea.

It's probably still going on down there. Funny story. As we were leaving some late teenage girls arrived, all kitted out carrying surfboards. They saw all the flags and tents and said "oh wow oh wow there's a surfing competition , ow wow brilliant" and they started trying to look cool and hot. I was thinking oh my goodness you are going to be so disappointed when you get closer!

I'll add some photos tonight.

Oh JJ - looking at that slide show through very misty eyes!

I see he hasn't lost any of his handsome looks

The instructor guy looks awesome - there is a shot in the middle where he is looking straight at your DS1 and the connection is amazing!

Your DS1 looks like he is having the time of his life - blub!

How fantastic and what a star

I know the photo you mean. The instructor was completely brilliant (am going to email the organisers and ask them to forward my thanks). He was really good at getting in there right away and just communicating. I don't know whether he had any previous experience with LD's but if not, he was a natural. Every time ds1 fell off he just hoisted him straight out of the water and back on the board. It was very impressive.

oh what a brilliant slideshow. Everything looks awesome - your little surfer dude, the instructor (agree with soapbox - noticed that pic too), the beach... lovely

Wow! Cool pictures JJ!
We took ds in a canoe this year (loved the water 'slides')- another idea for DS1 perhaps?

What fab photos. He looks really happy

PMSL @ is the instructor married Gawd knows. He wouldn't have looked at me I had my big white legs out (need to buy a wetsuit!)

His face - when he did his first wave (and stood up) was a picture. I think I will carry that look to my grave. He was beaming.

Those photos are wonderful.
I showed them to dh and he couldn't believe how DS1 is the spitting image of our ds!

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 15/09/2008 23:28

Really? Wow! I shall look out for a look-a-like

Funnily enough I think that JJ's DS1 looks a bit like my DS2 as well! Although it was more noticeable when he was younger (JJ's DS that is). But it may just be wishful thinking on my part...
