Granted, it took me over a year since getting his DX to actually do the application form for DLA - but I never thought we would get it first time - was sure we would have to appeal.

One less battle to fight, anyway.

bubbla - try and get on a Hanen course if your SALT department do them - it's a 9 week course to teach you techniques to help bring your child's speech on. There is a speech/language delay course "It takes two to talk", and a more ASD specific one "More than Words". I'm doing the "It takes two to talk" and finding it very helpful - you get 4 home visits from SALT, who watch me playing/communicating with S and advise me on what to do next with him.

bubblagirl · 09/08/2008 13:45

thank you will ask her as she isnt doing anything with hima t all at the moment so frustrating

TotalChaos · 09/08/2008 13:51

the It Takes Two To Talk book that the course is based around is about £30 from Winslow, similar on ebay - even if the course doesn't run in your area, it's still worth reading the book as it's got loads and loads of practical info and suggestions about helping kids with speech delay.

if you have a surestart centre nearby they sometimes run a very basic version of the Hanen course, called "You make the difference" - it's worth doing, but not as good as the SALT department ones, and designed more for kids who are at risk of speech delay/slightly behind than kids who have ASD. The surestart one I did wasn't even run by speech therapists, hopefully that's just my crappy city though.

bubblagirl · 09/08/2008 14:00

it willbe worth looking into as only has mild ASD but speech is abnormal in way his forming sounds so could be more to it

but im willing to try anything and looks like its all down to me now anyway as no one else seems to be dealing with us now we have diagnosis thank you x

TotalChaos · 09/08/2008 14:04

The Hanen courses focus on language and communication rather than speech sound production but hopefully if you went on one that was run by a SALT they could also help with the speech sounds as well as the the language?

you might find it useful to google apraxia and Nancy Kaufman, and to google the speechteach website (think it's www.speechteach.co.uk) as they will have lots of info and exercises to do with speech sounds.

bubblagirl · 09/08/2008 14:08

thank you so much your more helpful to me than the proffessionals lol xx

its so hard with all these questions and checking up and yet i know people that have faked it and got high rate makes you wonder how they did get found out but still it goes on and we have to go through every check and possible may get refused

Buckets · 10/08/2008 13:05

We just got ours first time for DS (3, AS), turnaround was just under a month! And middle rate too which we didn't expect (but won't say no to).
Perhaps they have lots of students doing the data entry over the holidays?

nikos · 10/08/2008 14:33

Buckets - is it worth applying then. Ds is same age as you and probably has mild ASD (currently in assessment). Can I ask what symptoms your ds had that you think got you the DLA. ASking because I didn't think it was worth our while applying.

bubblagirl · 10/08/2008 16:22

hi nikos my ds is 3.2 and has ASD its all to do withn there care needs being higher than other children there age

my ds has speech delay and poor understanding
no danger awareness
sensitivity to some surroundings
doesnt sleep well at night up and down with him
no stranger awareness
no understanding of certain things so unable to calm him and get him to understanding such as wait at the road he will be pulling away no go try to explain what would happen if gets hit by car its too much and he will just become hysterical
he knows ill isnt nice so any dangerous things i have to say it will make you ill until he is able to comprehend more

basically if there needs are much higher than right examples of behaviour danger to them selves such as wandering in the night climing furniture not realising its night time no way of rationalising just dealing with it

its worth applying you may get low rate but its still something to help

my ds will refuse to walk at times and be hysterical about it so have to always have his chair etc

DS is generally fine at home or with relatives but when out&about he just can't follow he just can't focus on following adult direction, like a big puppy, & needs 1:1 supervision so we use the pushchair for restraint a lot. We started every section with 'Ds's AS means that...' and tried to come up with an example eg constant supervision due to tendency to move large furniture around rather than ask for things out of reach, lack of fear/sense of danger and high pain threshold. Also mentioned his inclusive pre-school place as he wouldn't be able to fit in there without extra help, nappy changing, refusing to walk etc.
We basically cribbed what was on the paed's report, diagnostic assessment and the Ed Psych's report and sent copies of everything. Was very emotional starting the form but this money will really change our lives. Have already put a large chunk of the backpay into his Child Trust Fund which felt really good. I have an inkling he will have expensive hobbies by the age of 18.
