should stop moaning about not receiving as much of the diability element of tax credits which are after all, means tested? I just feel that DLA/Carers Allowance is a separate issue and people should be entitled to that regardless of earnings, whereas the tax credit system is primarily to support families on low incomes.

It pisses me off when people with very high incomes moan that they don't receive the same amount of disability element. There are people really struggling on low incomes FFS!

Yes I agree r3. I think that sort of trap is common. I work until 11pm every night in order to bring in an extra 12 grand that we desperately need. It's an essential part of our household income. This situation has arisen for reasons similar to those you describe.

I was wondering that TC.

I think if someone is going to moan about their finances then you do need to pick your audience. I wouldn't moan about ours to someone who had considerably less than us, but on a free for all website or to someone in the same situation of course you're entitled to moan.

I think the thing that annoys me the most is that whilst child tax credit is income related, surely the severe disability element should be awarded regardless of income. If you have a disabled child and are entitled to the disability element then you should get it - the rest of your tax credit award is the part that can change depending on income.

So if you get £10 a week basic CTC but qualify for the SDE then you should get the SDE + £10.

If you get £100 a week CTC and SDE then you should get the SDE + £100.

It seems quite straightforward to me.

Tc and jimjam I originally repiled to a post on another forum. The question was about earning too much to get the disability element, which I didn't have a problem with. A couple of responses really pissed me off tho stating they were only getting a couple of pounds pw because of the higher tax bracket and what a disgrace it was.
I thought I'd also ask wise MN's for their opinions too and I'm glad I did, thx for all the responses.
I wont get such reasonable responses on the other site tho, I'll just get called a negative, shit stirring tosser, lol.

I think also there is a tendancy to assume that everyone has the same outgoings as you. So that if you earn £200pw and someone else earns £700pw you assume that every penny of the £500 difference is theirs to fritter away. This is almost exactly what MIL/FIL believe - they earn less than DH so will come to him out of the blue and say "lend us £400,000". Literally. They have no mortgage to speak of, no children at home and plenty of leisure time. They are often going away on holiday or off for the weekend with friends - and good for them, so they should be at their time of life, don't begrudge it at all. But they still cling to the idea that they are hard done by and that DH is on some sort of fictional gravy train and could find the odd hundred thousand pounds that he wouldn't miss if he looked down the back of the sofa hard enough.

BPB - this is because we is luvverly!

Yurt said" BUt people aren't comparing themselves with those worse off financially. Or at least I'm not and nor is anyone else who has posted on here. I'm comparing myself with someone on the same household income - who like us will receive tax credits - but who has many more choices than us about when to work, where to work, access to cheaper childcare (childcare at all come to that) and without the expenditure we have related to our son's disability (which has been thousands). As other's have already said his disability hasn't suddenly disappeared (and nor has the cost associated with it) just because we earn more."

and I totally agree.

And then Sidge said "I think the thing that annoys me the most is that whilst child tax credit is income related, surely the severe disability element should be awarded regardless of income. and I completely agree!

It's nice when people say the things I want to say but better
